In this edition I shall profile Ali Abdulah Saleh, the current president of Yemen and his cousin Ahmed Hussein Al Ghashmi. In 1978, lured the former beloved president Ibrahim Al Hamdi and his cabinet to dinner, and then murdered them.
They planned to cite the violation of traditional values as the root cause for the death of the president and his men. In order to do that they hatched a plan. They brought three French women to Yemen, promising them work as fashion models. Then three days prior to the murder of the president and his cabinet, the pair murdered the women and hid them in a freezer. Following the presidential murders. They moved the women’s bodies to a room and invited a number of influential citizens to observe them in disarray, saying that the president and his cabinet had been caught in sexual misconduct with the women and as a consequence they got punished for breaking of traditional moral values. As planned, this information leaked to the public. But, the public rejected that explanation. Seeing their original scheme had not worked. They announced that the president and his cabinet, while working together, were subsequently found murdered by persons unknown.
Six months later, a suicide bomber murdered Saleh’s cousin and as a consequence Ali Saleh became a president of Yemen.
In 1979, a group called Alnassereen tried and failed to restore Al Hamdi system. Around 100 of the group, including 22 holding high rank in the government were executed. Uprising started against the regime, which lead the regime to establish an Islamic resistance militant (Aljabah Alislamiyah) with financial help from the Saudi kingdom.
The regime allowed most of the public schools to be changed to Islamic militant schools and camps and brought the fundamentalist to Yemen. Ali Muhsen Al Ahmar and Mohamed Abdulla Saleh both brothers of the president claimed to be a fundamentalist and lead the fundamentalist while the president claimed him self as Abaathee man "Member of Sadam Hussain’s political party" .The regime received a substantial aid form Saudi kingdom and Sadam’s regime.
The former president Al Hamdi was killed, even though the government budget and the economy were flourishing. The new regime used all the Yemeni reserve spending it on bribes to get support and "Do whatever you want but don’t shake my regime." This behavior led to sharp corruption and poverty.
-In 1979 a meeting was held in Kuwait between south and north Yemen leaders. The unification of Yemen was a topic of the meeting. Ali Saleh rejected Yemen unification.
-In 1979, a cycle of assassination of political and social influential figures had begun. Dr. Abdulsalam Aldomani and his brother were murdered and their bodies thrown off a mountain, claiming it was of a car accident. Almualami, Al Sheikh Shargabi and Sheikh Alrasas an influential social figures were murdered.
The regime denied any involvement in the assassinations as well as involvement in encouraging civil war between the tribes.
The regime encouraged tribal rules and prohibited the existence of any political parties. The regime influence also, touched the military segment by getting rid of untrustworthy military units, by sending them to war against Iran. It laid off most of the military personal and built his own personal military based on ignorance and immorality and set all of his family members ahead of the military.
In the government management, the regime put the frontier position for a non-family member and kept them powerless and gave the second position to a family member. For example a minister is a powerless position while the deputy is the powerful position and one of several deputies must be a family member. The regime created intelligent agent inside intelligent agent, and put intelligent in every sector of the society. As a result of too many intelligent, a fear has been created of " Mukhabarat, Ammen Sayasee, Amme Al rayees, Istetla Harbi". All the aforementioned names are terrified intelligent groups as well as the Islamic militants know lately by Al Qaeeda, or Ben Laden groups.
The regime reached a dead end, which let him accept the Yemen unification. The unification constitution allowed democracy, human rights, multi political system and no more than two five-year terms for presidency. During the first four years of unification, many southern leaders were assassinated and made most of them afraid to stay in the capital city. The regime denied any knowledge of who was behind of this endless cycle of assassinations.
Ali Saleh declared civil war against what he called anti Yemen unification. A month passed when the war was going on and no one listened to the vice president, southern leader, calling for an end to the unjustified war. The vice president called for withdraws of the unification without changing the name hoping he would set new rules for the unification. Ali Saleh took a chance and told the public that his fight was justified.
The aftermath, Ali Saleh took over the government system and illegalized protest and gradually set restrictions on newspapers and political parties. Saleh changed the constitution to allow him to nominate himself as president as many terms as he wants to and to expand each term from 5 to 7 years. He set a rule to give him the right to abolish the parliament any time he wants and twisted the democracy to work for him by holding false elections.
The regime claimed no knowledge of kidnapping and beating newspaper editors and professors such as Dr Abu Bakr Alsaqaf a university political professor , Dr Abdul Aziz Al Saqaf and Dr Al Hatheri. Dr Abdul Aziz Al Saqaf had been hit and killed by a car while he was crossing the street and the government denied any involvement.
On December 28, 2002, Garrallah Omar an opposition figure, Democracy and human right activist assassinated by an Islamic militant who worked for the regime and two American volunteer doctors were killed by a militant.
On December 23, 2003, Six students from Sana’a University had been kidnapped by the regime intelligence.
On February 19, 2004, Sadiq Nashir a news reporter, a kidnapper came looking for him at his home, he wasn’t there. The kidnapper told his daughter we are the murderers of Garrallah Omar and to tell your father to stop his activity or else he will be murdered.
On March 05, 2004, Saeed Thabith, a newspaper reporter kidnapped from the street by Al Saleh’s regime intelligence and accused of reporting false news about the president’s son who is a head of the special force.
Ali Saleh’s regime is in fear after Sadam Hussain regime collapsed. The regime pertained that it hasn’t any involvement in creating and harboring the Islamic militants and call upon USA to fight together against terrorists, which have been created by the regime and led by the two brothers of the president Ali Saleh over the past 26 years.
