| Description of short course: Introduction to coastal engineering, short history, new developments, review of basic fluid mechanics. Generation of wind waves, wave equations and their characteristics, working examples on wave properties, visualization. Wave transformations, refraction, diffraction, reflection, working examples on wave transformations. Tides, tide prediction exercise. Wave-structure interaction, piles, pipelines, rubble mound breakwaters, sea-walls, jetties and harbors. A comprehensive working example to design a small craft harbor. Sediment transport in coastal environments, analysis and preventive measures. Coastal water quality: Ocean outfall design considerations. The following material will be provided: (1) Handouts and design aids (graphs, charts etc.). (2) CD containing the computer programs used in the course. |
