Elijah Hatton
from an old newspaper clipping given to me by my Aunt Marlene

Sometime ago we wrote about the descendants of Samuel and Roseanna Hatton.  One of their children was Elijah who spent his life (except for 4 years) in what is now Wayne County.  When he arrived with his father, Wayne County was in Kanawha and then Cabell before becoming Wayne.

Elijah was born about 1796 and was four years old when he accompanied his father and his siblings to the Big Sandy River valley, settling at Round Bottom (now Prichard, Wayne County).  His mother had died when he was two years old.

He was married about Feb. 2,1818 at the age of 22,to Jane Elizabeth McGinnis who was born in 1789 in Rockingham County, Virginia.  It is believed that he was born in Hampshire County, VA (now WV).

Elijah was the youngest child of Samuel and Roseanna Queen Hatton, while Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel and Eleanor Carswell McGinnis.

Some researchers believe that Samuel Hatton, Sr., a widower, came to the Big Sandy River area about 1811 rather than 10 years earlier.  This seems plausible because Samuel was not likely to have made such an important move with children so young.  Elijah, the youngest, was about 15 years ols, mature enough to shoulder his part of the responsibilities on a frontier which only a few years earlier was inhabited by unfriendly Indians.

The children of Elijah and Elizabeth Hatton were:
1.  Edmond M., born Dec. 12, 1818in Cabell Co. (now Wayne), died
1855 and married Sarah Smith on September 29, 1842.

2.  Melvin, born in 1820 in Cabell County (now Wayne).
Married Amanda Compton on July 23, 1853.

3.  Melcenia, born 1822 in Cabell County, VA, married
August 4, 1842 to John Compton.

4.  Martha, born 1824 in Cabell County, VA, and married
August 4, 1852 to John Compton.
* Don't know if the marriages of Martha and Melcenia are misprints of the paper.

5.  Mary Ann, born in 1827 in Cabell County, VA, and
married in Lawrence County, OH, to Joseph Bradley.

6.  Philip Strother, born in 1831 in Cabell County, VA, and died
April 1904.  In 1856 married Margaret Paul of Virginia.

of Kentucky in 1847.

8.  Minerva, born in 1836 in Cabell Co., VA.  Married

9.  Samuel Kemper, born July 24, 1838 in Cabell Co., VA,
and died April 4, 1904 in North Dakota.  Married Oct. 20,
1859 to Frances Nichol Viers of Kentucky.

10.  Jane, born in 1840 in Cabell Co., VA, and married James Downey in 1858.

We want to thank Dr. Walter Hatton for sharing this material and the picture of Elijah Hatton that accompanies today's column.
