One day on a hunt, Darjan disappeared in a dust storm. Upon hearing the news and the callous comments of Gryll, the emotional 7-year-old Vryx's powers began to manifest - setting fire to several tents. Calling his bargain with the presumably deceased Darjan now nullified, Vryx was sent naked into the Wasteland to hopefully die of exposure.
But Vryx did not die. He remembers little of his years alone in the Wastes. He had many strange visions in that time. At times when he had given up all hope for survival, he would follow sounds and find a plant with water inside it or an injured animal that he could eat. Had someone helped him? He doesn't know. But he survived, and at 17 no longer feared the Wastes.
At this point in his life, during his solitary travels, he heard the sound of a child crying. He followed the sound to find a newly born baby abandoned. The baby had golden eyes and bright red hair like his own. He tried his best to care for her for 2 days before she finally died in his arms. Heartbroken, he searched and found the clan that had abandoned the child and it was none other than the clan of Gryll. The clan seemed to recognize him when he boldly marched into their cluster of tents carrying his burden of sadness. The now ancient wise woman spoke to him - Darjan had never been found and Uhrsla had died not long after Vryx had been sent away. The baby he had found was the daughter of Gryll himself, and his beautiful new young wife Aryjne. The rest of the clan gathered around, including Gryll and Aryjne who rushed forward, weeping, to take the dead baby from Vryx's arms.
Gryll declared that Vryx had shamed him and cursed the clan by bringing the child back and challenged Vryx to combat. Being horseless and bearing only a spear he had made himself, Vryx was at a distinct disadvantage but used his inherent Chaos manipulation - to the horror of the onlookers - to throw Gryll from his horse. Darjan's chain shirt slid out of position during the fall and Vryx slew Gryll with his spear.
In Soondar challenges, the victor may claim the possessions of the loser. Vryx gained back his father's chain shirt which had saved his life twice now, but had never been worn by him. He gained the noble horse Djudara. And he gained a wife, Aryjne.
Vryx was still not welcome in the clan, however. Unwilling to subject someone else to a life of exile, he gave Aryjne the rest of Gryll's many possessions, so she would never want and once again headed alone back into the Wastes.
The past seven years Vryx has been leading merchants through the Wastes and translating for them with wary Soondar. His usual pattern is after he gets paid to drink, dice, dally and drug the money away and then gets another job. He doesn't see much value in the metal coins the civilized world seems to adore but he is drawn to its vices. Despite these failings, he cares for and guards his horse, weapons, and wilderness supplies fiercely. He has never returned to his old clan but often thinks of Aryjne and what might have been.
After returning to his old clan, Vryx finds that Aryjne has become a powerful leader and is breaking the clan of many old traditions, including the subservience of women and the killing of young Warlocks. She has invited him to return to her when his travels have ended and sit at her side.
For the first time in his life, Vryx is wanted by friends and family. He eagerly awaits a chance to return to his clan and be with Aryjne. First, he feels he should prove his worthiness to her and the Warlock elders by assisting in returning Joff's Creature to its box on the Island of the Gods.
