The Story of Your Gift

December 2006

About the designer...

Sam Bowen has been a wood crafter for about five years now. He was first inspired by his shop teacher in high-school who showed the class his custom made pen. At that point he knew that was to be his passion as well. He started with just making pens but since then has branched out to make the many things you see here.

The Candle Holder

The two candle holders are made out of Cherry wood. This wood continues to be a popular wood for cabinets, carvings and turnery. You will notice that the candle holder is made so that you can put different sized candles in it. This special candle holder will hold from one-inch table candles all the way to four-inch decorative candles.

In the beginning...

The Whistle

The two whistles are made of mahogany which has a reddish brown color that darkens over time, and displays a beautiful reddish sheen when polished. The style of the whistle determines the pitch and sound. The shorter the whistle the more piercing the sound. (Sound quality for whistles sent to Spain requested by Michael Russell).

The Purple/Red Pen

This pen is unique in that is created out of Acrylic Acetate type of plastic most often used on kitchen counters. Wood tuners use it most often because it gives them a variety of colors and styles for their designs.

The Corn Cob Pen

The corn cob pen is one of the most unusual items that Bowen Custom Creations makes. As the title implies it is made out of a corn cob. Despite the fact that it is a light, soft material it is similar to working with harder, heavier woods. The result is a unique pen that sets itself apart from other writing implements.

The Clock

The clock is made out of Blood wood given its name for it's very deep red color. It is a rare wood to use in the USA and is grown in Central to South America. It is a hard wood that instead of fading with age it actually grows more deeply colored.

The Zebra Pencil

The pencil is unique in two ways. The first is that it is not obvious as a pencil it's designed to look like a pen. The second being the rare wood that it is created out of. Zebrawood is a decorative exotic wood. Zebrawood is distinctive for its zebra stripes. The most common species available are from West Africa.
