Sam Foley - Curriculum Vitae

Artist's Background

Sam Foley was born in Wellington, in 1977, but grew up in the coastal city of Dunedin, located on the lower East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

After graduating in 1998 from the Otago Polytechnic School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts he then moved to Auckland.  Whilst there (1999 - 2001) he held three solo shows at dealer galleries, Chiaroscuro and Grantham Galleries, and was co-director of the artist-run CITE Gallery.

Foley has work held in major public collections - Dunedin Public Hospital, the University of Otago and The Wallace Trust, in Auckland, to name a few.  His work is also held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia and the USA.  He has been an artist in residence at Puzzling World (acclaimed tourist attraction) in Wanaka, where he completed a renowned and much reproduced diorama mural on commission.

Moving to Sydney in 2002, he was immediately taken by the grandeur of the New South Wales coastline.  It has been a continued source of subject with its dramatic contrasts of light, stark ruggedness of the beach sandstone coupled with the stunning colours and textures of the flora.  In 2003 he was presented the Peoples' Choice Award at the Cleveland Art Awards, for his work, "Sonata at Sandfly Bay".

Foley lives alternately between Sydney and Otago, as both regions offer inspiration in their unique landscapes.
