In a game of chess you have two players each have 16 pieces, arranged as on the board.Players take turn. White going first, and the pieces can be moved.Chess was first played in India 1500 years ago when the pieces represented the Indian Army. After the game was brought to Europe in the Middle adges, the pieces had changed to those we use today. The object of the game is to capture the opponent's king. An enemy piece is captured by moving on to the square the piece occupies. Captured pieces are removed from the board.When a player's king is in a position where it could be captured on the next move, it is check. If there are no safe positions avalible the King is in CHECKMATE and the game is lost.
