The Cracking Crust
This activity will
help you understand how the Earth's crust buckles and cracks, letting magma rise
to the surface. If you live in a volcanic region or one where the land is very
buckled, there are probably hot spots where magma has risen close to the surface
and even broken through.
What you need:
Packets of mini Moro
Bars
- Unwrap the Moro Bar and hold
it at eye level.
- Slowly bend the ends of the
bar downwards. (if you live in a cold area you may need to gently warm the bar
up in the microwave for 10 seconds to soften it).
- Gently push the ends back
upwards, watching carefully what happened to the layer of soft caramel.
- Draw and discuss what happens.
- Relate the chocolate outer
layer to the Earth's crust and the caramel to the magma flowing up from under
the crust where the plates are shifting apart.
- Eat the Moro Bar!
