Creating Creatures

The envelope (see below) contains the genotypes for a male and a female creature. They will mate and produce a baby. The genetic terms phenotype and genotype are introduced. The activity also demonstrates the effect of dominant and recessive genes.

 

What you need:

An envelope containing the genotypes for a male and female creature.

Lollies, pipecleaners, etc, representing the various body parts.

Toothpicks (for joining the various sections together)

 

What you do:

Phenotype for each pair

HH=2 humps

Hh         "      

hh=1 hump

BB=3 body segments

Bb        "                    

bb=2 body segments

TT= Straight tail

Tt               "  

tt= curly tail 

       

EE= 2 eyes

Ee         "    

 ee= 1 eye     

OO= Green eyes

Oo           "        

oo=  red eyes     

LL= 6 legs          

Ll         "             

ll= 4 legs            

AA= Antennae

Aa         "         

aa= no antennae

Capital = dominant

Lower case = recessive
