Creating Creatures

The envelope (see below) contains the genotypes for a male and a female creature. They will mate and produce a baby. The genetic terms phenotype and genotype are introduced. The activity also demonstrates the effect of dominant and recessive genes.

What you need:

An envelope containing the genotypes for a male and female creature.

Lollies, pipecleaners, etc, representing the various body parts.

Toothpicks (for joining the various sections together)

What you do:

• Each creature has alleles for 7 characteristics. Sort out the mother's and father's alleles into two groups.
• Sort each group into pairs and turn the cards over so the code is not visible.
• Choose one allele from each pair (one from the male set and one from the female set
• Write down the genotype
• Describe the phenotype
• Construct the baby creature.
