Colourful Flowers

What you need:

• A light coloured flower ( for example, a carnation or daisy)
• 1 or 2 jars
• Water
• Food colouring - 2 strong colours

What you do:

• Pour some water into one jar
• Add several drops of food colouring to the water and stir in.
• Place the cut flower into the jar of coloured water. Observe what happens to your flower over the next few days

What does this tell us about how plants transport water?

Alternative activity:

Split the stem of the flower in half. Place one half of the flower into a jar containing water to which one colour has been added, and the other half of the stem into a jar containing water to which a different colour has been added. Observe the changes to your flower over the next few days.
