Just a little history... Lviv is a beautiful old town in Western Ukraine which despite all its turbulent history kept the charm and spirit of old medieval European cities. Lvivi was founded in mid-13th century by Prince Danilo Halitsky. The first mentioning of the city in chronichles dates 1265.
In the 14th century Lviv is taken over by Poland. The city is growing fast due to its advantageous geographical location and by 17th century it has ca. 30,000 inhabitants. Later in 17th century, Lviv becomes part of Austro-Hungarian empire. In 1784 the first Univercity is opened. The city contunes to develop fast and by mid 19th century becomes the economical and political centre of Western Ukraine. It also becomes the cultural and political center of movement for Ukrainian national movement.
In 1918 with the collapce of Austro-Hungary Lviv is proclaimed a capital of Independent republic of Western Ukraine but was shortly overun by Polish troops. Poland stays in control until 1939 when Soviet army takes over. Since than and until 80-s Lviv was the centre of independence movement which culminated in 1992 with Ukraine breaking out from USSR and proclaiming the Declaration of Independence. Today Lviv is ca, 800,000 city. |

I went to Lviv in the beginning of September 2001 with two fo my friends - Oleg Spivak and Svytoslav Komakha. I was changing jobs and decided to take some time off between leaving London and coming to Belgrade. We went to Lviv for 4 days to see the city and to attend a World cup qualification game of Ukraine national football team that for the first time was to take place in Lviv. We go deeper in into "continental" Montenegro- Ostrog Monastery - curved in a solid rock and hidden in the middle of mountain range not to be found by Turks. The car road goes all the way to the monastery...it's ok, you just should not look down... |
