The US Census Bureau records the median income levels of individuals based on many different parameters..  The charts below provide comparative information for salary earnings between men and women with different levels of education.  With this kind of information, it can clearly be seen the disparities with salary earnings.
The socioeconomic background of many women can be attributed to their educational background.  The income table depicts the higher earnings for women with higher levels of education compared to those with less.  Higher wage earnings would allow for, potentially, a positive change in the socioeconomic status.
This chart also depicts the disparity of wage earnings between women and men across all levels of education.  Even with the benefit of a higher education women still receive lower wages.  The "fair field" of wage earnings is already unbalanced for women with or without an education if considering the information given in these statistics.  How can a woman with such a disadvantage be equipped to fight this imbalance?

This information can possibly be discouraging for women from socioeconomic backgrounds who would not be able to move out of their economic circumstances due to many factors, the greatest being higher levels of education.
This fact alone can be a factor for potential employers to exploit with offering lower wages for women who may otherwise be uninformed of their rights to fair pay.  Education is the key to change.
