Top 100 of 2003

100.I Don't Want UWide Lifenot a lot of dance trax on this chart, but who can resist that sassy diva telling her man to pack his bags? Get out the door!
99. White FlagDidodisappointing showing considering her 2000 hits.
98.She Don't Want Nobody NearCounting CrowsNot their best, but a decent new track for the Greatest Hits.
97.Times Like TheseFoo FightersONLY the acoustic version.
96.God Put A Smile On Your FaceColdplayFirst of 3 appearances by this band.
95.Father And DaughterPaul SimonHad Art Garfunkel duetted with Paul, this could have been a national smash.
94.Hey Ya!OutkastA booty shaker, but a little obnoxious. Great video!
93.Only HopeCaedmon's CallMelodic Christian pop courtesy of Steve Lincoln.
92.Back Of Your HandDwight YoakamSimple yet beautiful, what Country radio SHOULD be playing.
91.Simply Being LovedBTNot sure why this hooky dance number didn't catch on.
90.RealPlumbGreat female lead vocal--another Steve Lincoln pick.
89.In This DiaryThe AtarisThere was a lot of crappy teen angst power pop released this year. One of the few worth charting.
88.Up!Shania TwainFun and bouncy and a whole lot better than the sappy "Forever and For Always".
87.The SwanThe Sheila DivineAtmospheric and moody, another Lincoln pick.
86.MosesColdplayThe remaining Coldplay song comes wayyyy later in the countdown and it's not the whiney "The Scientist."
85.TroublePinkReally thought this would be a Top 3 smash. Is the public already "pinked" out?
84.Bigger Than My BodyJohn MayerOne of the most played records of 2003. But it's not that great a song.
83. CarefulGusterMelodic and bouncy, first of 2 for this band. The album just ok.
82.Travelin' SoldierDixie ChicksWanted to hear more of this, but the boycott cut this one short.
81.Worn Me DownRachel YamagataOnly heard this a few times on Music Choice Progressive channel. May catch on in 2004. Hope so!
80.AloneLasgoDance track as catchy as "Something" (#31 in 2002), all over the radio in December, could have legs in 2004.
79.Now It's OnGrandaddyPretty pop, catchy melody.
78.Come Into My WorldKylie MinogueReminds me of 70s Donna Summer. I thought this dance track would've been bigger for her.
77.SympathyGoo Goo DollsAbsolutely nothing wrong with this except that it sounded like typical Goo Goo we've heard before.
76.The Way You MoveOutkastIrresistible 70's Soul hook!
75.Something CrazyFreddy PerezStrong song, the video had all the energy of early Springsteen. Amazed this didn't click big.
74.I Won't Stand In Your WayFeelOnly 2 spins on WDST but enough to place it this high.
73.I Can Only ImagineMercy MeA truly CHRISTian hit that even got airplay on Z-100!
72.It's Five O'Clock SomehwereAlan Jackson & Jimmy BuffettDidn't it sound like they were having a ball on this one?
71.How Do I Love HerSteven Curtis ChapmanStrong voice, secular song from Christian superstar.
70.Blues BeachSteely DanStraight outta the 70s in the best sense of the word!
69. Down On The CornerJohnny Marr & The HealersNOT the CCR classic. A WDST hit.
68.Cry Me A River (Remix)Justin TimberlakeONLY the "Let It Whip" remix. The original is ca-ca.
67.OpenBruce CockburnHe's been making solid music for almost a quarter-century yet is still not a household name.
66.Stacy's MomFountains Of WayneAn extremely cute video and clever song; the #4 teen angst song on this countdown.
65.Queen Of The UndergroundJesse MarinDespite its catchy hook, this never caught on nationally. Puzzling.
64.Pavement CracksAnnie LennoxDependable self-assured vocals from a 20-year (?!) veteran.
63.You Know You're RightBig Bad Voodoo DaddyAn energetic foot-stomper that would've charted higher had I heard it more than two times.
62.Things I Miss The MostSteely Dan"The sex!" See #70.
61.Why Don't You And ISantana f/Alex Hand/Chad KroegeroI liked the Alex Hand version but Kroeger's gruff vocals really gave this song its power.
60.Girl All The Bad Guys WantBowling For Soup#3 Punk teen angst song. Stoopid fun!
59.My Baby BlueJohn HiattThanks WDST for playing the heck out of this! 1 week at #1.
58.Sister SurroundSoundtrack Of Our LivesReminds me of a cross between "Bohemian Like You" and 70s Rolling Stones.
57.Slung-loErin McKeownPeppy summery breezy fun! Not sure what the title means.
56.You DanceEastmountainsouthSmooth folk that sneaks up on you. Thanks WDST.
55.Seven Nation ArmyWhite StripesIrresistible instrumental backing with yet another Stones-influenced sound.
54.Complex PersonPretendersChrissie and Co. go reggae sounding nearly as strong as their early 80s classics. Number 55 in 2002!
53. Smile/Untitled (Come To Jesus)Chris Rice2nd & 3rd single releases from the somewhat disappointing "Run The Earth Watch The Sky" CD still heads and shoulders above most AC fare.
52.I Begin To WonderDanii MinogueI incorrectly predicted this Britney/Madonna/Donna Summer hybrid would top the charts. Maybe in 2004?
51.Sally Ann/Soldier SoldierNatalie MerchantReleased simulanteously, kudos to WDST and every other station that gave these fine tracks from Merchant's fine CD airplay.1 week at #1 for "Sally Ann".
50.How Good It Can GetWallflowersThe 3 singles from their latest CD are among their best work ever. Look for their best song ever higher up in this countdown.
49.Hole In The WorldEaglesThis could have been Top 20 everywhere including this chart if not for the endless repetition of the chorus. Gorgeous harmonies.
48.Backseat Of A Greyhound BusSara EvansHer strong vocals and songwriting make this track stand out from the banal Country pack.
47.I RefuseSense FieldAbosolutely no clue why this Steve Lincoln pick did not catch on.
46.Are You Happy NowMichelle BranchNumber 6 with Santana in 2002 and "All You Wanted" was #15. This Alanis-inspired change is not necessarily for the better, but still a good showing at #46.
45.Move Your FeetJunior SeniorEvery year needs its quirky dance track, ala "Around The World", "Blue", "Days Gone By". This year it was these guys' turn. Surprisingly mediocre showing in NYC.
44.All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)Wide Life f/Simone DenneyWide Life's 2nd track on this chart, this theme from "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy" is just starting to get NYC radio airplay which could make this a hit in 2004 as well. 1 week at #1.
43.Step In The Name Of LoveR KellyEven more shocking than R Kelly having a song on this countdown is the fact that he has TWO!
42.RighteouslyLucinda WilliamsAs far as raw gutsy emotion goes, no one can top Lucinda when she's at her best, which she his on this country blues rocker. Grammy voters, take note! 1 week at #1.
41.Be MineDavid GrayI doubted "A New Day At Midnight" could top "White Ladders", one of my Top 10 CDs of this decade so far and I was right. Still, the disc had several gems, including this single.
40.The Boys Of SummerThe AtarisThe original was never one of my favorites, but if you're gonna remake a classic, ya better put your own spin on it, which is what this 2nd entry from these guys did. Are you listening, Steve Winwood, Michael McDonald, et al? 1 week at #1.
39.Six O'Clock NewsKathleen EdwardsOne of the most promising debuts of the year. AAA radio rightly embraced her. Thanks WDST!
38.Swing SwingAll American RejectsThe #2 Punk Angst song has hooks galore building to that "marrr-yyyy meee" wail. Cool video.
37.No Letting GoWayne WonderThere was no letting go of the appeal of that handclapping thing on this late Spring anthem that simply begged to be played loud with the top down. What's my age again?
36.Crystal VillagePete YornFirst of 2 appearances from "Day I Forgot" by this most reliable hooky rocker. 1 week at #1.
35.Another DaySteven DelopolousThis Burlap to Cashmere lead vocalist's pipes are so strong that they'd overshadow any contestant on those "Idol" programs except for Norway's Kurt. Thanks Steve Lincoln.
34.The Remedy (I Won't Worry)Jason MrazHis debut single was ubiquitous on radio airwaves this year, yet his followup charts even higher on this survey.
33.PeacekeeperFleetwood MacOdd choice for a lead single, but a winner nonetheless from 2003's Album of the Year! 2 weeks at #1.
32.Get BusySean PaulA former PITBound, I got caught up in the singer's energy. See #37.
31.LowKelly ClarksonI so want this "American IdoI" winner to succeed, and if she resists her Mariahisms and just sings the damn song she could have a career beyond "Thankful". Irresistible chorus makes this song a winner.
30.Bring Me To LifeEvanescenceEven radio couldn't resist this Enya Meets Linkin Park gem that was all over the radio/video airwaves. Grammy Record of the Year?
29.Closer To YouWallflowersSubdued but powerful. I think these guys get better with each album. Their highest showing on my chart ever.
28.IgnitionR KellyAnother former PITBound gives R his 2nd song on this countdown and 2nd biggest hit ever, following 1999's #27 "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time". Let's face it --the guy's got the pipes and this hook is irresistibly singable!
27.Devil BabyMark KnopflerShould be a Grammy Song of the Year nominee. Understated and melodic at the same time.
26.Amsterdam (Gonna Write You A Letter)GusterGood ol' driving power pop. Still not tired of this one.1 week at #1.
25.Come Back HomePete Yorn"Life On A Chain" remains his biggest hit (#20 in 2001) but this song comes close just beating out "Strange Condition" (#28). 2 weeks at #1.
24. There's No LimitDeana CarterNumber One Country song of the year. A welcome comeback from a strong singer with something missing from most Country offerings--a melody.
23.Say You WillFleetwood MacTitle track from the Mac should've been the lead single to give this fine CD the attention it deserved.
22.Don't Wanna TryFrankie JR&B Artist of the Year on this Timmy T ("One More Try") soundalike that still sounds good, even in a Dance remix.1 week at #1.
21.NumbLinkin ParkNumber One Punk Angst song of the Year benefits from powerful tradeoff vocals, a strong video and a hook to die for!
20.UnwellMatchbox TwentyRadio's oversaturation lowers this strong song's chart position. A fine fine effort from a band that you'd'a thought would've burned out several records ago, but thankfully keeps crankin' em out.1 week at #1.
19.Taxi RideTori AmosNothing radically different than what she's been doing for the past decade, but why mess with success? 2 weeks at #1.
18.TailspinThe JayhawksIn a perfect pop world, these guys would be the 21st Century's answer to the Beatles. Consistently strong melodic harmony-laden hooky vocals. And this is only their FIRST entry on the countdown!
17.Calling All AngelsTrainLyric of the Year:" in a world where what we want is all we want until it's ours" coupled with the affirming "I won't give up if you won't give up". Tim Harris heard the call! 1 week at #1.
16.Why Can't ILiz PhairCritics by the dozen condemned her selling out but there's no disputing the strength of this hooky pop gem that perfectly suits Phair's voice. Off and on my chart since JULY! 1 week at #1.
15.Here I AmEmmylou HarrisOne of WDST's few missteps this year was ignoring this one. An incredibly heartfelt performance on Letterman kept this on my weekly chart for months though it never reached Number One.
14.I'll Tag AlongRichard ThompsonInterestingly, John Hiatt's similar "Everybody Went Low" hit #14 last year. A welcome return from another classic vet.
13.You And I BothJason MrazSans instrumental intro, this year's New Artist of the Year hits the ground running and never lets go. Deserves John Mayer's success. Grammy, are you listening?
12.Thrown DownFleetwood MacStrongest track from "Say You Will" features Stevie Nicks' vocals and LIndsey Buckinghams' guitar at the top of their game. Shamefully ignored by radio.
11.Get Some SleepBic RungaWho?? A Steve Lincoln recommendation with an 60's like feel that shoulda been this year's Sixpence None The Richer.2 weeks at #1.
10.Save It For A Rainy DayThe JayhawksAfter more than a decade of cranking out the best pop ignored by Modern Radio, this act releases their strongest ever! Fans of harmony and melody take note!
9.Got Your Name On ItFeelWDST missed the ball on this one, too. Thanks Steve Lincoln. Strong vocals and one of the best hooks of the year. 2 weeks at #1.
8.If You're Not The OneDaniel BedingfieldOversaturated by year's end, but couldn't get enough at first, thanks to Steve LIncoln. 2 weeks at #1.
7.Suga SugaBaby BashI joked that this song didn't have a prayer of matching the success of my all time favorite song by the Archies, but lo, this ultraincredibly catchy R&B smash with gorgeous uncredited vocals by Frankie J spent 2 weeks at #1 in December. Sambooty Shaker of the Year!!
6.One Horse TownThe Thrills2 weeks at the top and if the album's as good as critics say it is, look for the Thrills to thrill in 2004 as well! Only The Jayhawks did this kind of thing better this year.
5.BounceArt Garfunkel f/Maia Sharp and Buddy MondlockIf he'd only recorded this with Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel could've had a Top Ten smash. From the excellent "Everything Waits To Be Noticed" CD, this song was also my #13 Song of 2003.
4.The Other Side Of The RadioChris RiceChristian Song of the Year, though nothing conventional AC radio needed to shy away from. Bouncy, top-down driving pop. Thanks Steve Lincoln! #1 for 1 week.
3.Bad DayR.E.M.Critics seem to delight in running down this track as being a ripoff of one of their previous hits. So what?? It's a damn great song! 5 weeks at #1. Surpasses their #5 showing in 2001 for "Imitation Of Life".
2.ClocksColdplayFrom that gorgeous instrumental opening to the shifting melodies and Chris Martin's wailing vocal performance, this song is perfection. 2 weeks at #1, most weeks on my overall chart with 21, the only record to log more than 20.
1.I'M WITH YOUAVRIL LAVIGNE"COMPLICATED" DIDN'T DO MUCH FOR ME, BUT I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH OF THIS EARNESTLY SUNG BALLAD THAT WAS #48 IN 2003 AND LOGGED MOST WEEKS IN MY TOP TEN (14) AND MOST WEEKS AT #1 (7).

1.EAT YOU ALIVELIMP BIZKIT

These are the albums I played most in 2003 according to number of spins

My Favorite Albums of 2003

20Steven DelopolousMe Died Blue not everything clicks here, but totally worth the 1.99 I paid and then some for "Another Day" and "Jungle Trail" alone. Dynamic voice.
19Rodney CrowellFate's Right HandPoignant master songwriting craft, but his vocals have never been his strong suit.
18David GrayLost SongsSame position as last year! Great for mellow moods.
17Pete YornThe Day I ForgotA bit more erratic than his debut, but what clicked did so superbly like "Come Back Home" and "Crystal Village".
16Shawn ColvinA Few Small RepairsSeptember's outdoor concert with Shawn, Dar Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter & Patty Griffin prompted me to rediscover this disc. Colvin sings live so much better than on record!
15Natalie MerchantThe House Carpenter's DaughterExcellent departure for her, totally folkie and atmospheric!
14Emmylou HarrisRed Dirt GirlIn lieu of buying "Stumble Under Grace", I rediscovered this gem all over again!
13Iron & WineThe Creek Drank The Cradle11 cuts of just a guy singing accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Perfect for campfires!
12R.E.M.The Very Best Of 1987--2002Had to get it for "Bad Day", "Animal", "The Great Beyond" and the definitive version of "All The Right Friends" though I already have everything else on other albums. Glad I did!
11Barbra StreisandThe Movie AlbumCan't understand why this is getting panned so badly. The first 6 cuts are gorgeous, though I must admit the rest do sink into a stew of sameness
10Nicolette LarsonSleep Baby SleepAn album of lullabies from the dearly departed Larson. Beautiful!
9Belle & SebastianFold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A PeasantFinally found this used and it was worth the wait. I'm a B&S convert!
8Bette MidlerSings The Rosemary Clooney SongbookOnly "Mambo Italiano" sounds slightly tired, the rest are wonderfully sung with "This Ole House", "Slow Boat To China" (with Barry Manilow), and especially "Sisters" (with Linda Ronstadt) being exceptional! I could do without "White Christmas", though.
7Getting ThereAlan KirkA guy I met on a job sent me this CD he just finished and I really, really enjoyed it. Kinda like Angie Aparo, though the production and some of the vocals could stand some beefing up.
6Simon & GarfunkelThe Collected WorksAll 5 S&G CDs in one Box Set, with "Parsley Sage" getting the most airplay. Most of the bonus tracks work and I'd forgotten how strong some of their non-single tracks were.
5Chris RiceRun The Earth, Touch The SkyDisappointing new release considering his previous "Past The Edges" and "Deep Enough To Dream" were both in my Top 5 last year. This one seems geared toward children with the best song (except for "Other Side Of The Radio") stuck with the awful title "Nonny Nonny".
4Dar WilliamsThe Green WorldI've had this CD for a few years, but for some reason it never clicked til I put it on this summer and it stayed in my player through the Fall. Another winner for Dar!
3Patty Griffin1000 KissesNumber One in 2002, I still played the heck out of this the whole winter and it got regular spins the rest of the year.
2Art Garfunkel with Maia Sharp & Buddy MondlockEverything Waits To Be NoticedA late entry last year clocked in at #11, but I really got into it this winter. It's one of those albums where I had a different favorite song each week. The harmonies of Art & Maia are flawless and Garfunkel sounds as good as ever. Had this disc been recorded with Paul Simon, it would've gone platinum. Gorgeous and extremely highly recommended for anyone who likes S&G!
1FLEETWOOD MACSAY YOU WILLWow. I had high hopes for this disc based on the 4 new tracks on "The Dance". But could the Mac survive without Christine McVie? I must admit the first 2 tracks featuring Lindsey Buckingham didn't thrill me at first. Odd since his "Out Of The Cradle" from 1992 is one of my all time favorite albums. But things really picked up with Track 4. "Thrown Down" has that classic Mac sound with Stevie singing the hell out of it. "Miranda" sounds like an "Out Of The Cradle" outtake as does "Red Rover" so by now I'm hooked. Then comes the obvious single "Say You Will" and I could feel myself warming up to the disc. "Peacekeeper"'s a great song, just an odd choice for lead single. From then on, the CD just seemed to improve track by track. I was wrong to expect another "Rumours". Once I let go and enjoyed this for what it was--the best of solo Buckingham and solo Nicks with just a hint of each other's influence--I could thoroughly enjoy it. At first I thought "Bleed To Love Her" paled compared to the live version, but eventually even that won me over. The album ends perfectly with Lindsey and Stevie each closing with a ballad. Gorgeous, and in between was the most consistently melodic disc I heard all year. I grew to love every song on this album, including the first 3 I orginally dismissed. The band sounds as tight as ever while Stevie's vocals haven't sounded so consistently strong since "Fleetwood Mac" in 1975. In fact, since that record, the band has not made an album I didn't adore (except for "Time") and "Say You Will" can proudly hold its own with any of them!
