He caused a sensation on the ITV soap when he appeared as internet stalker Gary Adams luring Corries young schoolgirl mum Sarah Louise Platt to his home using the computer. I was a bit worried playing a part like that but people were great and even stopped me to say how much they enjoyed the acting, says a relieved Sam. I think theyve seen me doing so many different things that they appreciate Im just playing a character - even if it is an internet pervert. It certainly brought home the dangers of the internet to a lot of people. One woman said she locked up her daughters computer right after seeing the programme because she knew she was using the same sort of chat rooms. Sam has certainly avoided being typecast during his acting career. Before he became a Corrie villain, he made his name in Brookside playing hairdresser Peter and his singing talent has seen him leading celebrity teams to victory in Channel 5 karaoke music show Night Fever. He recently took to the road to star in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and another musical is in the pipeline for later this year. He even met his wife, glamour model Linda Lusardi, when they were both appearing in panto. He played Prince Charming and she was Snow White. Now the couple live outside London with their two young children, five-year-old Lucy and Jack, aged two. Ive been on tour for the last two years and took a break at Christmas to be with the family, says the fond dad. The children are a full-time job and I felt awful being away for most of Jacks first year. I had to get to know him all over again and it was two or three months before he would come to me as dad. I think youve got to get your priorities in order in this business and my first priority is my family. Its tough when Im away from home but Linda and the children come and stay with me whenever they can when Im touring.

Sam is currently brushing up on Irish accents to play a waiter on stage in Coventry for the hit comedy Women on the Verge of HRT. He says confidently: It will have people rolling in the aisles. The play, about two middle-aged women who set off on a pilgrimage to Irish singer Daniel ODonnells hometown, gives Sam the chance to play several different characters, including the odd female role. Its like nothing Ive done before and I wanted to see if I could do it, he says. I play Fergal who is a waiter who would really like to be Daniel ODonnell.

The 32-year-old is the second youngest of seven brothers and sisters and grew up in Liverpool. He made his professional acting debut playing a US marine in the musical South Pacific with Gemma Craven, but first dreamed of a sporting career. I went to Liverpool Theatre School and used to go around in tights and leg warmers for dance classes and then I played this camp hairdresser in Brookside. Sam roars with laughter: After that, I just had to marry Linda Lusardi.
