TV TIMES Soap Special
His looks are far from evil but Sam Kane is a nasty piece of work in Corries latest shocker. Soap baddies tend to be brooking, menacing types think Nick Cotton, Jez Quigley and Cain Dingle but Sam Kane, Coronation Streets latest recruit to hiss, boo brigade breaks the mould.
Best known as Brooksides camp hairdresser Peter, handsome Sam has warm, open features, but he causes terror in the street this weeks as the internet loner Gary who lures school girl mum Sarah Lou to his house under false pretences (inset)
They wanted someone totally opposite to the stereotypical pervert and it was really good that because it could be anybody doing this, maybe the fella next door, then one day you have the police taking him away say Sam, the husband of ex-Page 3 girl Linda Lusardi. The experienced musical theatre actor had his first taste of playing a baddie last year in a stage production of Carousel I loved it beams Sam. I go addicted to playing baddies and when this part came up I was in heaven. Linda had played Snow White in pantos for years and she asked to be the Wicked Queen and said afterwards Ill never play Snow White again! Its so much more fun being wicked! Playing a baddie, explains Sam, is not just more enjoyable, its easier to do. When you play a nice guy you have to get the right mix between the genuine and smarmy; its quite a fine line and if you get it wrong people can see right through you. Bu there are no rules on how to be bad if youre playing a psycho you can be whatever you want to be, so I find it much easier to be bad. Gary really is quite vile. Im getting into it so much that theres things Im doing without realising it, like he might touch Sarahs face and the stroke his fingers. I watched one of my scenes and thought Oh youre horrible. As father of two, Sam confesses that he could easily feel uncomfortable playing a man who preys on young girls via the Internet.
Im aware fingers will be pointed and things said to me in the street, but Im an actor with a jog to do. The potential dangers to kids of Internet Chatrooms are horrendous. The more aware of it people are, the better. Hopefully this story line will open parents eyes to the dangers. But that aside, Sam would love his Corrie character to evolve into a Nick Cotton type perennial bad penny, popping up every now and again. That would be a dream scenario for me, to be able to jump from a great TV baddie role back to the theatre and vice versa.
