Biology 092: Basics of Cell Biology
Room: Collins 201 (lecture) Collins 236 (lab)
Time: T/TH 5:45-7:45 (lecture) 7:50-9:10 (lab)
Summer 2005
Instructor: Dr. Samantha Kerry
Contact information: You can reach me by email at [email protected]. I will be available immediately before and after class to answer individual questions. Messages can also be left with Carolyn Henderson in the Departmental Office in Room 280 Collins Building.
Prerequisites: MAT 060, RED 080 (or satisfactory score on placement test)
Corequisites: RED 090 (or satisfactory score on placement test)
Required materials: Essential Biology with Physiology (Campbell, Reese and Simon) and Biology 092 laboratory manual.
Course Objectives:
The official objectives and course outline can be found online at: http://www.durhamtech.edu/html/prospective/coursedescriptions/coursedescriptions.htm
If you do not have internet access, you may request a hard copy from your instructor or at the Departmental Office (280 Collins).
Attendance: Students
should be on time for each class and lab session and should be prepared to
remain for the full duration of the class or lab. Chronic tardiness and/or early departure may
adversely affect the student’s course grade, and also cause that student to be
dropped from the course. The attendance policies of
Durham Technical Community College (DTCC), as described in the Catalog and
Student Handbook (found at http://www. durhamtech.edu/html/prospective/catalog.htm)
will be enforced. Regular attendance is
required for the student to complete all course requirements and receive the
optimum benefit of instruction. The
College attendance policy can be found at: http://www.durhamtech.
edu/html/prospective/academicinfob.htm.
Course withdrawal: Students may
officially withdraw from this course up to the 60% point of this semester and
receive a grade of “W”. Drop forms,
which are available in the Registration Office, must be signed by the
instructor and submitted to the Registration Office. Failure to complete this procedure by the 60%
date will result in a final grade of “F2” for the semester. To withdraw after
the 60% date, a student must present documentation of extenuating circumstances
(e.g., medical emergencies, deaths in the family) to the instructor. Please also review the 2003-2005 College
Catalog and Student Handbook for a statement of the complete policy regarding
student withdrawals at: http://www.durhamtech.edu/html/current/registration.htm
#withdrawal. The last date to
drop this class is Tuesday, June 28 (W-date ).
Grading: Grades
will be decided by a traditional ten point scale as follows: A (100-90), B
(89-80), C (79-70), D (69-60), F (59 and below). The components of this course will be divided
as follows:
Exam #1: 20%
Exam #2: 20%
Final Exam: (cumulative) 30%
Quizzes: (lowest dropped) 20%
Lab Attendance: 10%
Total: 100%
Extra
Credit/Late work: There will be no opportunities for extra credit. Quizzes will be administered in the first ten
minutes of lecture on the dates provided in this syllabus. Make sure to arrive on time on quiz days to
ensure you can finish them within the time provided. Extra time to take the
quizzes due to tardiness will not be allowed, and quizzes cannot be made up. Exams will be administered in the first hour
of lecture on the days indicated in this syllabus. Again, tardiness will not
incur additional time to take exams, so arrive promptly to class on exam days.
Lecture will resume after each test and continue into scheduled laboratory
time.
Grade Reporting
Policy: Each semester,
Makeup policy: In the event of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to identify and make up all missed work at the earliest opportunity. Failure to make up missed work will adversely affect the student’s course grade. Dates for tests and quizzes are given in advance in this syllabus. Quizzes may not be made up. However, I will drop the lowest quiz grade. In certain (extreme) circumstances, a student may take a test other than the date indicated. These circumstances include death of an immediate family member and illness requiring a doctor’s care, and will be decided on an individual basis by the instructor. Unacceptable circumstances include social or sporting events, and tests in other classes. Test date conflicts should be brought to the attention of the instructor as soon as possible. Written confirmation of the test date conflict will be requested. All make up exams will be administered at the end of the semester on Tuesday July 19th. Make up exams will be in essay format and much more difficult than the normally scheduled exam. Failure to follow these procedures, or failure to show up for the make-up exam date will result in a grade of ‘0’ for the missed test.
Special needs: Students who require academic accommodations
due to any physical, psychological or learning disability should request
assistance from the Disability Services Coordinator within the first two weeks
of classes. Likewise, students who
potentially require emergency medical attention due to any chronic health
condition are encouraged to disclose this information to the Disabilities
Services Coordinator within the first two weeks of classes. The Coordinator can be contacted by calling
686-3652 (voice) or 686-3606 (TTY), or by visiting the Student Services
Offices, Room 23 of the
Tutorial Services are available in the
Academic conduct: The College’s Catalog and Student Handbook details the Academic Honesty Policy at: http://www.durhamtech.edu/html/prospective/academicinfob.htm #attendance. Students are expected to adhere to this policy, and any infractions will be pursued via the DTCC violations procedures as outlined on the website above. It is the student’s responsibility to be informed of these policies.
Miscellaneous: The college does not permit a student to attend class or laboratory with a child or to leave a child unattended on campus while attending class.
Cell phones and pagers have become
necessities to many people. However, they are very disruptive to the classroom
environment. Students are requested to
either turn off these devices, or switch them to silent mode before lecture
begins. If you must answer your phone
for emergency purposes, please leave class quietly to do so. Students
will not be allowed to answer cell phones during tests or quizzes.
Absolutely no food or drink (including gum) will be allowed in the laboratory. Beverages will be allowed during lecture, however students may not bring food into the classroom, as it is too disruptive to others. Students can eat during the short breaks provided in lecture and between lecture and lab.
