Notes for LENA GERTRUDE REEVES: "Many farmers may have struggled in the early part of the century but the Reeves of Glebe Farm illustrate where ingenuity and diversification could lead. James Reeves, originally from Norfolk, began farming in Upton. His son Obadiah, according to the 1891 census, ran Glebe Farm, owned by his mother, as a market garden, he then began renting land and rearing cattle and trading as a travelling butcher from a horse and cart, even after owning the butcher's shop in King Street Southwell. This first shop was run by Obadiah's daughter a Mrs.(Lena) Howells. Each evening when the horse and cart returned to the shop Mrs.Howells had to be ready with a nosebag for the horse. Failure to do so resulted in the horse charging through the shop. The family prospered, later owning Cliffe Farm and Daisy Farm in Upton while animals continued to be slaughtered at Glebe Farm.

Obadiah was a church warden and Parish Councillor. His family of six sons and five daughters included Sidney, who followed him into the business. Obadiah never exchanged his horse and cart for modern motor transport and when he died in 1940 his obituary mentioned the well known longevity of his horses. Obadiah had a "mare Kitty who lived to be thirty" and it was said he would rather fall out with his wife than his horse. Today Charlie Reeves still lives at Glebe Farm and Sydney's son Robert after retiring from the Southwell shop in 1988 returned to live in the Parish."
