Vivek Ratnam Example
Rule: Avoid using qualifiers in a thesis statement.

Example: Southern gothic literature, however, is not racist, but, in some cases, makes statements denouncing racism.

Problem: The qualifier in some cases weakens the thesis by unnecessarily widening the scope of the argument and eliminating clash.

Solution: Do away with in some cases altogether.

Southern gothic literature, however, is not racist, but rather makes statements denouncing racism.
