Setup, Part 4

There was a knock at the door and before Sarah could answer it, a woman burst in.

"Sarah! You gotta watch channel 11 news, hon. I saw it earlier and you gotta see it." She went to the television and turned it on.

"Hi Suzie." Suzie was Sarah's next door neighbour.

"Howdy Samantha!" She turned her attention back to the television. "Look!"

The television reporter was talking: "A body was found in a motel room earlier this morning on the East Side of Dallas. Police say the body is that of a woman and are currently looking for a former Dallas police detective, Carlos Sandoval who may have witnessed the crime." A picture of Carlos in uniform appeared on the screen. Sarah went into the kitchen. The reporter continued. "If you know the whereabouts of Mr. Sandoval, please call Dallas PD."

"That's your Carlos, ain't it, hon?" Suzie's accent was thick.

"Yes, Suzie, that's my Carlos." Sarah called dejectedly from the kitchen.

"Well, we all know he ain't a murderer, and unless I miss my guess Samantha's man is out there helping him, ain't he?" As Sarah came back into the living room, Suzie continued. "If there is anything you need from ol' Suzie, you just let me know."

"Thanks Suzie," Sarah said. An idea soon came to her. "Suzie, do you still have that long black wig from the 70's?" Sam looked at her sister, puzzled.

"Yeah, sure, hon. You want to use it?"

"If I can, along with your car."

"Sarah!" Sam started.

"Sam, he wants food. I made him this stew and I'm just going to take it to him. You don't even have to come."

"Sure, you can use the car. Just bring it back in one piece, okay? I'll go get the wig." Suzie left for her apartment.

"Sarah, I don't know if this is a good idea. There are cops all around the building. They'll follow us."

"Not if I look like Cher. C'mon Sam. I just want to make sure he's okay. Please?"

"Okay," Sam said after some deliberation. "We just have to be careful."

Within half an hour, Sam and Sarah were disguised and on there way out of the apartment.

*****

"Hi. They are just leaving the apartment. The locator in her purse is working perfectly. I'll stay about 5-10 minutes behind them…..I'll let you know when it's done."

*****

"Okay guys, listen up." Ryan was addressing his men, the men who were trying to find Carlos. "We've got a line on Sandoval. Problem is, he says Dallas PD are involved." There was a rumbling from the men. Ryan held up his hand. "I know, I know. But to keep things on the level we're going to let him turn himself into the Rangers tomorrow. We'll be there."

"Do you know where he is?" on of the detectives asked.

"Not yet, but I am expecting a call from Walker letting me know." Ryan stood up. "That's it guys. I'll tell you where in the morning." As Ryan headed out of the room, he just hoped that Murphy would take the bait and listen for the call from Walker. Then they would grab him when he tried to get to Carlos.

*****

Carlos heard the car before he saw it. Peeking out the window, with his gun in his hand, he saw an unfamiliar car with two people. He didn't recognize the driver with the long black hair. The car stopped about twenty feet from the front porch and Carlos watched as the two got out. Sarah took off the wig and called to the house.

"Carlos? It's us. We brought food," she said, smiling.

"Wow, are you two a sight for sore eyes!" Carlos said as he came out the door to hug Sarah. He looked at the pot Sam was carrying. "Mmmm. Smells good! You always do cook when you get anxious," he said to Sarah. The group moved back into the farmhouse. Sarah unpacked the plate and utensils she brought and put them on the table.

"Go on. Enjoy!" The two women watched as Carlos dug into the food.

"This is great!" he said between mouthfuls, "but you two can't stay. Something is going down tonight and I don't want you around."

"Carlos.." Sarah started.

"No, Sarah. I mean it. I am really grateful for the food but you gotta go now." Just then the sound of a car could be heard approaching. Carlos went to the window to see a Dallas PD car entering the yard. He turned. "Sarah, the cell phone is behind you. Call Trent and tell him it's going down, now!" As Sarah reached for the phone, Sam approached the window.

"What's happening, Carlos? I'm sure they couldn't have followed us."

"I'm not sure, Sam. I've got to see who it is." As Sam and Carlos watched, a lone figure got out of the car.

"Carlos, I know you're in there. It's Tom Russell." Carlos looked at Sam.

"Hi Tom," he yelled.

"C'mon out, Carlos."

"How did you find me?"

"That doesn't matter. Truth is you'll do better with me than some of the others." The officer was leaning on the car. "Tell you what, Carlos, let's start with the women. Send them out."

Carlos turned to Sarah. "Did you get Trent?"

"He's on his way, with Walker."

"Okay, you two go then." Carlos turned back towards the window.

"No, Carlos," Sarah told him.

"It's okay, Sarah. Tom is one of the good guys." He turned to the window and yelled, "They're coming out, Tom." Carlos turned and kissed Sarah. "I'll be fine. Now go." He pushed them out the door to the porch.

"Okay girls. Get going before anyone else gets here and you're charged as accessories." The two stood on the porch, not really wanting to go. Tom yelled, "GO!"

From inside the house, Carlos assured them he would be okay. Sam and Sarah looked back at Carlos then slowly descended down the steps to their car. Wordlessly they got in, started it and began down the drive.

"Okay Carlos. You're turn now."

"It's okay Tom. I'm not going to put up a fight,' Carlos said as he walked out of the farmhouse and down the porch towards the car. He held his hands up so Tom could see them. He had left his gun on the table.

"That's far enough. You know, Carlos, things were going pretty well until they decided to supoena you."

"What?" Carlos stopped, trying to comprehend what he had just heard.

"I'm in business with Murph."

"You? Why Tom?" Carlos was beginning to understand the imminent danger he was in. He just hoped Trent and Walker would be there soon.

"I've got my reasons. And you are just too much of a problem, Carlos."

*****

"Sam, stop the car," Sarah said.

"What?"

"I said stop the car. I've got a bad feeling about this."

"Sarah…"

"STOP IT or I'll jump!" Sam stopped the car and Sarah jumped out. She ran back towards the clearing in front of the farmhouse.

"Sarah!" Sam called, running after her, the car still running in the drive.

*****

"Good-bye, Carlos." Tom pulled the trigger three times quickly.

"NO!!!" screamed Sarah as she saw Carlos fall. She started running towards him.

"SARAH! STOP! He's going to shoot!" Sam dove and tackled Sarah just as a bullet flew over their heads. Russell had started firing at them. Sam grabbed Sarah and threw her towards the car. "RUN! To the car!" Another bullet flew past them.

"But, Carlos…" Sarah sobbed.

"GO, DAMMIT, or he'll shoot you, too. GO!" The two ran for the car, with Sam pushing Sarah all the way. Bullets were flying past them. When they reached the car, Sam pushed Sarah into the passenger side and jumped behind the wheel. She threw the car into gear and tore out of the driveway and out onto the road as fast as the car would go. A quick right took them out to a main road heading away from Dallas.
