Gimli was brought to Rivendell to represent the Dwarf race, and to help decide what will become of the One Ring. Though most people look at Gimli as only being a short person, there is another, very strong side to him, as well as an extremely confident side.
He becomes close friends with Legolas, an Elf, which is strange for one of the Dwarven race, for Elves and Dwarves have never gotten along with each other all that well. Nevertheless, this pair of friends form a strong bond of friendship, that would be like a stick on a stone if someone ever tried to break it.
