Clauses of concession

Definition

Clauses of concession are a kind of subordinate clauses (dependent clauses) that you do not seem to be all that familiar with, even though, although, though, in spite of, despite of.

The following constructions are possible:

* [Though / Although / Even though] + [Clause of concession] + [Main clause]

Example: Even though the dog has not bitten the man, the man kicks the dog.

* [Main clause] + [Though / Although / Even though] + [Clause of concession]

Example: The man kicks the dog, though the dog has not bitten the man.

* [In spite of/ despite of] + [noun/ -ing form] + [main clause]

Example: In spite of not/ despite of not being bitten, the man kicks the dog.
