This story is a direct sequel to "Explorers" (although it was written first) and the characters in it also appear in that story.

One day, Lisa dropped the twins off at school. They
always met their friends at the flagpole and then walked to
class. It was a Wednesday, and the girls were in sixth grade.
Jennifer started hanging out with the "cool group". They
promised her that if she hung out with them now, then next year
in junior high, she would be cool, too. Robin saw her friend,
Michele, and walked off to class.

"See you later, Jenn."

Jennifer saw her new friend, Libby, and walked over to
her. Libby steered Jennifer back around, and started walking
away from the school.

"Where are we going?" Jennifer asked.

Libby answered, "Today, we're going on an adventure."

"What do you mean?" Jenn asked.

Libby said, "We're playing hooky today. Let's go. I told
the other girls we'd meet them at the brook by the fire
station."

Before Jennifer could say anything, Libby has whisked her
away.

Down in the brook, Jennifer and Libby sat and waited.
Jennifer wasn't feeling so well. She had a bad feeling about
what they were doing. Just then, Molly and Cynthia appeared.

Libby asked, "What took you so long?"

Molly said, "I was running late."

And Cynthia said, "My mother dropped me off, and I had to
wait till she left, and then double back here. Sorry!"

Libby said, "Well, we have to plan our day. Ooh, this is
going to be so much fun."

Jennifer says, "But won't we get into trouble? I have a
bad feeling about doing this."

"Look," said Libby, "do you want to be cool or not? No
one will even miss us. Mrs. Altfest will mark us absent and
tomorrow when she asks if you were sick, you tell her yes, and
when she asks you for a note, you tell her you forgot it. It's
no big deal, really."

Jennifer said, "Um, okay. I guess you're right." So the
girls set about planning their day.

Meanwhile in school, Mrs. Arthur was taking attendance.
She called her neighbor, Mrs. Pappas. "Is your twin in class
today? Jennifer is out."

Mrs. Pappas replied, "Yes, Robin's here. Do you want me
to ask her if her sister is sick?" Then Mrs. Pappas turned to
Robin, "Is your sister sick today?"

Robin looked confused. "No, what do you mean?"

Mrs. Pappas told Robin that her sister is not in her
class. She gives Robin a pass and Robin sees for herself that
Jennifer is not in her classroom. She became very worried. She
went down to the principal's office. She asked to see her
uncle, and told him the story.

He called Jennifer's teacher. "Are you sure you didn't
see Jennifer Clemente this morning?" he asked her. Mrs. Arthur
replied that she hadn't. "I also have several other girls
absent today."

Jack wrote down the girls' names and buzzes his secretary.
"Please call the following students' parents and find out if
their child is home sick today, and if not, ask them to come to
the school immediately. I hope we don't have a kidnaping on our
hands."

Jack called Lisa at home. She answered, "Hello. Oh, hi
Jack. Is something wrong with the twins? What?"

Jack told Lisa to drop the baby off with Joan and get
right over to the school. She called Charlie at work and told
him the news that Jennifer was missing.

Jack said to Robin, "Now tell me again, when was the last
time you saw Jennifer?"

Robin told him that the last time she saw Jenn was after
Lisa dropped them off at the flagpole and then she went to
class. After speaking with his secretary, and confirming that
the other three girls are not at home, Jack calls the police.
"Hopefully," he told the officer, "we're looking at a case of
four girls playing hooky, and not anything more serious."

Meanwhile, the foursome made their way through the stores
in downtown Merrick. One store owner said, "No school today,
girls?"

Jennifer thought they were in trouble, but then Libby
calmly said, "Yea, we're at lunch. I know it's early. But
we're going on a field trip today."

The four girls barely made it out of the store before
cracking up. After awhile, Libby announced that they must steal
something from a store to prove they want to be in the cool
group. All the girls took something except Jennifer. She was
scared. She knows stealing is not right.

"I just couldn't," she said.

"You can, and you will," Libby said. "It doesn't have to
be anything big, just take something, or I'll tell everyone that
Mr. Levine is your uncle."

Jennifer gets scared. She thinks back to the night of the
sleepover when Libby found out about her uncle. He asked her
not to tell anyone and she hadn't, not yet, but she had been
holding it over Jenn's head ever since. Jennifer looked around
to make sure no one was looking and quietly snuck a keychain
into her pocket. Outside the store, the girls showed off their
treasures.

Meanwhile, the police were questioning all the teachers
and students. The parents were frantic and have already gone
home to retrieve recent photos of their girls. One of the
parents said to Libby's mother, "If they ran off, it's probably
all your daughter's idea. She is a bad influence on my
daughter." Lisa said, "I don't think Jennifer would do
something like that. I hope nothing terrible's happened."

At lunchtime, the girls went to the pizza place near
Foodtown. They were enjoying pizza and cokes, when suddenly
Jennifer froze. She saw Keith, an employee of Foodtown, the
store where her father was manager. She tried to hide, but
Keith saw her.

"Hi, Robin or Jennifer? Do you know who I am?" Keith
asked.

Jennifer said, "Yes, you're Keith. You work for my dad.
I'm Jennifer."

They talk for a few minutes. Then Jennifer started to
talk very fast. "Listen, Keith, can you do me a big favor?
Don't tell my dad that you saw me here, okay? I mean, I was
supposed to bring my lunch today, but I wanted to go out with my
friends. I don't want him to get mad."

Keith laughed and said, "Sure, I can keep a secret."

Jennifer sighed with relief. What she didn't know was
that their little escapade was making headlines all over town.

Back at Foodtown, all the employees were buzzing with the
news that Charlie's daughter was missing. Around 1:30, Keith
overheard some workers talking about Jennifer.

"Are you sure?" Keith asks. "I just saw her an hour or so
ago."

Nobody could believe it. They tell him he must call
Charlie at the police station and let him know. Keith didn't
know what to do. He knew he promised Jennifer, but if he could
help them find her, he knew what he had to do. He called
Charlie and told him.

The police had Keith come down and he answered a million
questions. "No, they looked fine. Yea, they were smiling.
They seemed to be having a good time. No, there were no strange
guys around."

The police brought pictures to the pizza place and to the
stores along Merrick Avenue. Many store owners had seen the
girls, but no suspicious people. The police were pretty sure
now that the girls had just wondered off. The problem now was
trying to find them. But no one knew where the girls were now.

The girls, by this time, had gone to the brook near
Jennifer's cousins' house. They walked all the way along it,
down past Mepham High School. Jennifer had never walked so far.
She was getting tired, and had to go to the bathroom.

"I think we should start back now. It's getting late,"
she said.

The other girls agreed. They wanted to get back to school
by 3:00, so they could be there when their mothers picked them
up.

Suddenly, Cynthia screamed, "Owww!"

"What happened?" the other girls asked.

It seemed that Cynthia had twisted her ankle and could no
longer walk on it. The girls didn't know what to do. It was
getting very late, and they feared now with Cynthia's twisted
ankle that they wouldn't get back in time.

"I think we should just admit defeat." said Molly. "

What are we gonna do?" Jennifer asked. "I'm gonna be in
so much trouble. My dad is gonna punish me."

Libby agreed. "I'll probably get a whipping for this
stunt."

The other two girls nodded.

Jennifer said, "Look, let's go up to that house there, and
ask the people to help us." So they did.

The nice woman who answered the door recognized the girls
from the news. She telephoned 911 and the police. The girls
did not know yet the trouble they had caused. Suddenly, an
ambulance pulled up and the police. The woman was questioned,
but they soon realized she just found the girls, or actually the
girls had found her.

Then Jennifer felt her heart fall into her stomach. She
saw her mother and her sister coming towards her. She knew they
knew what she did.

Robin ran to her and hugged her. "Oh, Jennifer, I'm so
glad you're all right. We were so worried about you."

Lisa pulled Jennifer into her arms and hugged her. "Thank
god, you're okay."

Jennifer looked around. She did not see her father, and
she started to feel relieved. But then, there he appeared. He
looked at her, and she looked at the floor. She knew he would
be disappointed in her, and suddenly she felt very disappointed
in herself.

Charlie started to walk towards her. He was so relieved
that she was okay, but he was also very angry. He knew the next
few minutes were crucial to keep their relationship on the right
track. He went up to her and put his arms around her.

"I'm so glad you're all right, Jennifer. We were frantic
with worry."

Jennifer was relieved. She thought her father was going
to scream at her right there and then.

Then Charlie said, "C'mon let's go home. We have a lot to
talk about."

On the way home, in the car, Robin told Jennifer that she
had been on the news, and they had thought she had been
kidnaped. Jennifer felt terrible. She had no idea the trouble
their little escapade had caused.

When they got home, Charlie called a family meeting. The
four of them went into the den. "All right, Jennifer, now what
on earth possessed you to do something like this?" Charlie
asked.

Jennifer explained Libby's plan to go on an adventure.
Then Lisa said, "But, honey, you must have known it was wrong to
leave the school grounds like that?"

Jennifer looked down at the floor. She knew her parents
would never understand.

She said, "I know. But Libby made me!"

Charlie asked how someone could make her do something that
she didn't want to do. "It's not like she tied you up and
dragged you. You know better than to do something like this."

Jennifer started to cry. Charlie wanted some time to calm
down, so he sent the girls upstairs. "Go take a nice bath, and
then we will have dinner, and we will talk again after dinner."

The girls went to their room. Robin ran Jennifer her bath
while she got undressed. Robin sat with Jennifer in the
bathroom while Jenn took a bath. Jenn told Robin about her day.

Then she said, "Robin, if I tell you something, will you
promise not to tell?" Robin nodded.

Jenn said, "I did something today. Something really bad."

Robin said, "What?"

Jenn said, "I took something."

Robin did not understand. Jenn said, "I took something
from a store, without paying for it."

Robin could not believe what her sister told her. She
said, "Jenn, you'd better tell Mommy and Daddy about it."

Jenn said, "Why? What are you crazy? I'm already in
enough trouble."

Robin said, "You know that if Daddy finds out, you'll be
in even more trouble. It's better if he hears it from you in
the first place."

Jennifer knows her sister is right, but is scared to tell
her parents about the keychain.

After dinner, the family went back into the den to
continue their discussion. They had had a nice dinner, and
Charlie had calmed down a bit. The girls' parents explain to
them that the school is responsible for them once they are on
school grounds, and that they are not to ever leave without
permission.

Charlie said, "Jennifer, what you did today, was very
irresponsible, and you will be punished. Don't ever do this
again. Do you understand?"

Jennifer nods. She looks at Robin. Robin nods her head
and mouths, "Go on."

Jennifer said, "Daddy, there's something else. I did
something else bad today."

Charlie said, "What?"

Jennifer replied, "I, um, I took something."

Lisa said "What do you mean, 'you took something'?"

Jenn said, "I, um, I took something from a store."

Charlie is shocked. "You mean, you stole something?"

Jennifer looked at the floor. Charlie put his hand on her
chin and lifted her head up so that she is looking right at him.

"Well?" her father asked.

Jennifer said, "Yes."

Lisa said, "Jennifer, you know better than to steal
something! I can't believe you would do something like that."

Charlie said, "What did you steal?" Jennifer tells him.
He tells her to go get it. She brings the keychain to the den.

"It's just this little key chain." she said.

Charlie said, "It doesn't matter if it's a little
keychain, or a million dollars. You know better than this."
Jennifer could tell her father was furious.

Then Robin jumped in, "But Daddy, isn't it better that
Jennifer told you, then if you were to find out later?"

Charlie said, "Yes, I'm glad you told me Jennifer, but you
will still have to bring it back tomorrow and apologize to the
store owner."

Jennifer shook her head no. "I can't do that."

"You can do it, and you will!" Charlie said. "Let's go
upstairs now. You're going to be punished."

Jennifer followed her father up the stairs to her bedroom.
He pulled her desk chair in the middle of her room and told her
to come and stand next to him. She did.

"You understand why you're getting a spanking, young
lady?" her father asked.

"Yes, sir. I cut school and disappeared, and I stole a
keychain," Jennifer said and then gulped.

"And you worried me, your sister, your uncle, and your
mother half to death, not to mention the fact that the entire
police force was out looking for you! I've never seen you do
something so irresponsible before! You should feel very
ashamed, young lady!" her father shouted.

"I do, Daddy, I do. I'm really sorry. I know I deserve
this punishment," Jennifer admitted.

"Well then, let's get to it," Charlie said.

He pulled Jennifer's pants and panties down to her ankles.
Then he bent her over his lap. He started to spank her naughty
bottom. First one cheek, then the other, Charlie continued to
alternate spanks on Jennifer's behind. While he spanked, he
continued to lecture his daughter on how her actions affected
others.

Jennifer cried out each time Charlie emphasized a point
with a well-placed spank in the middle of the two cheeks. It
hurt like hell. Jennifer could not remember getting a worse
spanking in all her eleven years. Of course, she thought that
each time she was spanked.

Finally, Charlie was finished. Jennifer was hysterically
sobbing. Charlie pulled her into a standing position. He told
her to go put her pajamas on and get right into bed.

Jennifer laid on her stomach that night. She never did
tell her father how Libby convinced her to do what she had done.

The end.
