Fire Island-part 1
"Come on, girls, are
you ready to go?" Charlie called into the bedroom. The family was taking a
trip to the beach at Fire Island. It was about a forty-five minute ride and
Charlie wanted to get going. He looked at his watch and called them again.
Robin came out of the
bedroom, wearing a chartreuse and neon green bathing suit. "I'm ready,
Daddy. Look, I'm wearing a bikini," she giggled.
"Yes, you are,
sweetie. And by the looks of it, you might glow in the dark."
"Daddy, you're
silly!"
"No, Mommy, I won't.
No!" Jenn said, running into the kitchen completely naked. Lisa came
running after her and gave Charlie a helpless look.
"Jennifer! Calm down.
Stop Running! What did Mommy tell you to do?" Charlie asked sternly.
"Daddy! Mommy said I
had to wear my pantsies. And I don't wanna," Jenn whined.
Lisa frowned. She put her
hands on her hips and stared at Jennifer. "Just in the car, Jennifer. It's
a long ride. Then at the beach, you can take them off."
Jennifer put her hands on
her hips as well. She began to pout. "But I don't wanna put them on under
my bathing suit. It'll look funny. Daddy, do I hafta?"
"Jennifer, you will
put on your pantsies right now, and I don't want to hear any more argument
about it. It IS a long car ride."
"But Daddddddy!"
Jennifer whined. Then she looked up to see Charlie staring at her, and not
looking very happy. "All right, fine. I'll put them on under my shorts and
t-shirt.
Jennifer went back to her
room to put them on, and came out ready to go. "I'll put my bathing suit
on at the beach. Is that all right, Daddy?"
Charlie answered,
"Yes, I guess so. Come on, it's getting late. Are we ready to go?"
Lisa sighed. "Yes.
Come on girls. Get your bag of sand toys and let's go!"
In the car, Lisa wondered
if this trip to the beach was such a good idea. She had just found out that she
was pregnant for the first time and she was a bit nervous. She knew Charlie had
lots of experience with this, but still she worried.
The girls were very good in
the car ride to the beach. They played games and talked and looked out the
window. Charlie thought maybe they could actually go the whole day without incident.
He'd be wrong, of course.
Finally, they pulled up to
the beach. Charlie drove round and round until they found a parking spot. The
girls each carried something from the trunk. They then began to walk toward the
ocean. The sand was very hot, and difficult to walk on. It would be a long, hot
day.
Pointing, Robin shouted,
"Daddy! Daddy! Look at the water!" Both girls started to run toward
the shore.
"Robin! Jennifer! Stay
with us, please, We need to spread out the towel and go over some rules before
you get in the water," Charlie advised them.
Robin declared,
"Rules? Oh, Daddy! Why do there always have to be rules?"
"There have to be
rules so you know what is okay and what is not. If you really don't want beach
rules, we can have stay at home rules instead." It was early in the day,
and already Charlie was aggravated.
Robin asked, "Does
that mean we have to stay at home?"
Charlie looked at Lisa and
sighed. Then he turned to Robin and said, "That means you can listen to
the rules for the beach and follow them, unless you want to stay at home. Is
that clear?"
"Yes, Daddy,
sorry," Robin said.
They found the perfect spot
and laid out the towel and dropped all the beach stuff upon it. Charlie opened
the umbrella and told the girls to sit down. While he spoke to them, Lisa
rubbed suntan lotion on Robin's back. "Now girls, I want you to stay in
sight of this spot all the time, unless Mommy or I are with you, okay? And when
you go in the water, you stay within those buoys which mark the shallow areas.
And you let one of us know BEFORE you go in the water at all, each time,
understood?"
Robin said, "Yes,
Daddy."
"Okay, Daddy. Mommy,
can I put my bathing suit on now? Oh, sorry, Daddy, were you finished?"
Jenn asked.
Charlie answered,
"Yes, I am finished. Honey, do you have anything to add to their
rules?"
Lisa put her hand on her
head and thought. "No, I don't think so. Okay, come here, Jennifer. Lisa
began to undress Jenn, but she became embarrassed and looked around.
"Mommy! NO! Not in
front of everybody!"
"Oh, for crying out
loud, Jennifer! You're just a little girl." She looked over at her
husband. "Here, hon, Charlie, hold up this towel, while I change our
modest daughter."
Charlie grinned and held
the towel up to screen Jennifer. The twins were nine years old, but sometimes
Jenn acted like she were a teenager. Then again, sometimes she acted like she
were five years old.
Lisa finished helping
Jennifer put her bathing suit on. Then before Jenn could run off, she rubbed
some suntan lotion on her back and arms and legs. Then the girls ran off to
play. They dumped their toys and busily began making a sand castle. Charlie
rubbed suntan lotion on Lisa while keeping a tight eye on the kids.
After a few minutes, Robin
yelled, "Daddy! Daddy! Look what we made!"
"Yeah, come help us,
Daddy!" Jenn called.
Charlie walked over to
where the twins were. He examined their handiwork. "Whoa, what a big sand
castle! Do you want help with it, girls?" Charlie asked as he knelt down
to join in the construction of it. He told Jennifer to go to the water and
bring back some water. Then he taught them how to make a drip castle.
They put sand in the bucket
with the water. Then Charlie showed them how to drip it onto the dry sand, over
and over.
"Neat. That's so neat,
Daddy."
"Yeah, where'd you
learn it, Daddy?" Robin asked.
Charlie smiled.
"Grampsie taught us when Uncle Bob and I were little."
Robin and Jennifer smiled.
They tried to picture their daddy and their uncle as little boys and their grandfather
as a young dad.
They played and built their
castle nicely for awhile. But you know that never lasts.
Jennifer shouted,
"Robin, No! Put the sand here!"
"No!" Robin
argued, "I can put it where ever I want. Can't I, Daddy?"
"Robin! Jennifer! You
can stop fighting, both of you, or you can work on separate sand castles.
Jennifer, do not tell your sister what to do. Robin, try to cooperate with the
building that Jennifer is doing."
But Jennifer didn't listen.
She did not like where Robin was putting the sand. After a few more times of
her doing that, Jenn got real angry. She stood up and before Charlie or Robin
could stop her, Jenn wrecked the whole castle. Robin just stared at the crushed
pile of sand for a minute. Charlie looked at Jennifer and started to stand up.
Jenn folded her arms across
her chest, pursed her lips into a pout, and stormed off. Stomp, stomp, stomp,
stomp!
"Jennifer!"
Charlie called. "Stop that! Come here at once." Now, Charlie jumped
up from the sand.
Jennifer had walked a few
feet away. She looked back over her shoulder at her father and said,
"NO!" She then resumed walking, and finally running.
Charlie quickly ran after
her, scooped her up, and carried her back to the towel.
"Jennifer! It is not
acceptable to wreck the castle that you and your sister were sharing. Nor is it
okay to storm off, and particularly not to run away when I call you. What do
you have to say for yourself, young lady?" Charlie scolded, after placing
her on the towel.
Jennifer pushed him away
from her and said, "I don't care! Robin wasn't doing it the way I wanted
her to." Jennifer began to cry and whine.
"That's enough out of
you, young lady," Charlie said as he sat down on the towel. He grabbed
Jennifer and pulled her across his lap. Charlie gave her about fifteen hard
swats on the seat of her swimsuit.
"OW! Dadddddddy!"
Jennifer cried.
"You will not whine,
yell, or misbehave. Is that clear, Jennifer Lynn? Now I want you to stay here
on the towel for a few minutes, until you are ready to behave yourself
again."
Charlie looked over at
Lisa. She had not said a word the entire time since Charlie had returned with
Jennifer. Now, they exchanged a look that said, "Please let this be it for
the day."
They were both surprised
when Jennifer shouted, "NO!" She stood up and began to run away. But
Charlie was quick this time. He jumped up and ran after her. He grabbed her and
sat her back on the towel. He was boiling mad.
"All right, you had
your chance. Now you are in BIG trouble, Jennifer," Charlie warned. He
took her over his lap again, but this time he pulled down her bathing suit
first.
"Daddy! NO!" Jenn
cried.
Charlie began to spank
Jennifer. <SMACK> <SMACK> <SMACK> <SMACK> <SMACK>
<SMACK> <SMACK> <SMACK> <SMACK>
"OW! No! Stop!"
Jenn cried, trying to wiggle away. But Charlie had a firm grip on his naughty
little girl.
Charlie said, "Stay
put. <SMACK> <SMACK> You will not <SMACK><SMACK> run
off. <SMACK> You will not <SMACK> act up. <SMACK> You will
<SMACK> behave yourself <SMACK> today <SMACK> or you will be
a VERY <SMACK> sorry <SMACK> little <SMACK> girl.
<SMACK> Is that clear?" <SMACK>
Jennifer began to cry real
tears and screamed. She didn't even care that half the beach was watching and
listening. "I'm sorrrrrry, Dadddddy! I'm sorry! I'll be good."
Charlie stopped.
"Okay, Jennifer, your spanking is over." He pulled up her bathing
suit, lifted her into his lap, and held her. "Now can you behave for
Daddy?"
Jennifer let him hold her.
She was whimpering because the spanking really hurt. She put her arms around
his neck and squeezed.
"I'm sorry, Daddy. I
just felt so mad. It was just a stupid sand castle. I'll be good. Do you
forgive me?"
Charlie smiled. "Yes,
I forgive you, baby. But I want you to spend a little time here on the towel,
in time out. Then you can go back to playing. It was just a sand castle, but it
was partly Robin's, so wrecking it hurt her, do you see that?"
Jennifer thought about it a
minute and then nodded her head. "I'm sorry, Daddy. Can I go say sorry to
Robin and then I'll come right back here?" she asked sincerely.
"Okay, but no
fighting, and come right back."
Jenn said,
"Okay." She walked to where Robin was attempting to rebuild the
castle. Jenn leaned down and whispered, "I'm sorry I told you what to do,
and knocked down our castle. Hey, it looks pretty good now."
Robin said, "Yea,
that's okay. Wanna help?"
Jenn thought, "I need
to be in time out. When I'm done, I'll help you. Okay?" "Okay."
Jenn was so excited that
Robin forgave her, that she ran back to the towel. She momentarily forgot about
her sore backside and her impending time out. "Guess what, Daddy! Robin's
not mad, and she wants me to help when I'm done in time out. Okay?"
Charlie smiled. He was
amazed at how quickly the girls' moods changed. They could be bitter enemies
one minute and the best of friends the next. "Okay, you can help her after
your time out," he said.
About eight to ten minutes
later, Charlie said, "All right, Jennifer your time out is over. But
remember to behave yourself and stay in sight and follow the rules. Okay?"
"Okay, Daddy,"
Jenn said, as she rubbed her bottom. She walked back over to where Robin still
sat and helped rebuild their sand castle. After awhile, they got bored and
asked their daddy if he would take them in the water.
Charlie stood up. He asked
Lisa if she wanted to join them, but Lisa only shook her head no. "Okay
Robin, Jennifer, I will go in the water with you. But remember, stay in the
marked area. And no water-fights, either."
Charlie held Robin's hand,
while Jennifer waded in on her own. Jennifer had taken swimming lessons every
year at camp and was in the top swimming group. Robin, on the other hand, was
afraid of the water, and didn't know how to swim.
"Daddy, hold my hand.
I'm scared!" Robin cried.
Charlie gripped her hand
firmly. "Okay, Robin, here is my hand, we won't go in too deep for
you."
Robin held on to her
daddy's hand. Jennifer shouted, "Oooh, look, Daddy, here comes a wave.
Jump, Robin."
Robin shrieked, "No, I'm
scared." She reached her hands up to Charlie. "Daddy! Daddy! Pick me
up!" she cried.
Charlie lifted Robin by the
waist so she could still enjoy the wave without risking being overwhelmed by
it.
Charlie encouraged her,
"Whee! See waves can be fun!"
Robin uttered, "Oooh,
that *was* fun, Daddy. Do it again!"
Charlie smiled. "Okay,
wait for it. Here comes another wave--Whee!" Charlie said, as he lifted
Robin over the next one.
"Yay! It's fun,"
Robin said, all the while still clinging to Charlie.
Jennifer said, "Daddy!
Can we go a little deeper? I want to swim in on a wave."
Charlie said, "Yes,
you can go a little deeper if you like, Jennifer, but stay where you can stand
up, and where I can see you. I will stay here with Robin. I think this is as
deep as she wants right now."
Robin nodded her head in
agreement. She was getting a little more used to the water, but she didn't want
to go in any further. She was still clinging to Charlie and letting him lift
her over each little wave.
Jennifer went in a little
deeper, but stayed where her father could see her. She rode the next few waves
in. "This is fun, Daddy," she said after one particular wave.
Meanwhile, Charlie played
with Robin and the waves. He kneeled down and held her up like she was swimming,
but fully supported.
Robin cried, "Daddy!
This is scary. Wah, here comes a big wave." She held her hands up for
Charlie to pick her up. He did. She looked around and said, "Where's
Jennifer?"
As Charlie picked Robin up,
he looked around and did not see Jennifer either. He had only taken his eyes
off her for a second. Where could she be? He carried Robin to a little
shallower area where she could easily stand. "Now, lovey, walk back to the
shore and wait for me."
Robin looked uncertain, but
Charlie nodded at her. "Go on, lovey. We'll be right there."
Then Charlie headed out to
look for Jennifer. He was pretty worried, at this point.
Just then, a big wave came
and Jennifer rode it to the shore. She got up coughing because water had gotten
into her nose and mouth.
Charlie ran over to her and
picked her up. "There you are, Jennifer!" He patted her back while
she coughed. He waited until she caught her breath and said, "How far out
did you go, baby? I couldn't see you and I was worried."
Jennifer shook her head
back and forth. "No, Daddy, I didn't go out too far. I stayed where you
could see me. Honest! And then a big wave came. It was really scary! It knocked
me over and I went under."
"Oh, that *is* scary.
Well, I'm glad you're all right," Charlie said as he held and comforted
her. Jennifer continued to cry and cough. Charlie continued to rub her back.
"There, there, Jennifer, it is all right now. I think we need to go back
to the towel for a bit, don't you, Baby?"
Jennifer nodded her head
yes. With Charlie still carrying her, they headed back for the towel. Robin was
sitting on the beach where the water ended and the sand began.
Charlie leaned down and
said, "C'mon, Robin. Let's go."
"No, Daddy! I made a
friend and we're making a sand castle together. I want to stay!" she
whined.
"Robin! What is the
rule about whining?"
"There is no whining?
I'm sorry, but I want to staaaaaaaaay!"
Charlie took a deep breath
and counted to five. "Ask nicely, Robin, if you really want to."
Robin, also, held her
breath for a few seconds and then exhaled slowly. Then in her nicest voice
possible, she said, "Daddy, may I stay here and work on the castle with my
new friend?" She looked up at her father to await his reaction and answer.
Jennifer, who was still in
Charlie's arms, practically held her breath. She was amused by their
interaction.
"All right, Robin, you
may. But remember to stay in sight of me or Mommy. Please introduce me to your
new friend."
"Okay, Daddy, this is
Wendy. She's 7. I'm older than her. Right?"
"Yes, that is right.
Hello, Wendy."
"Hi," the little
girl said.
Charlie said, "Okay,
play nicely, Robin. Jenn and I are going back to the towel for a while."
They resumed walking back
to the towel. Charlie was still holding Jennifer. He lightly rubbed her
shoulders as they walked, to give her reassurance. He knew she had been through
a scary experience. He was a bit angry at himself for not keeping her closer to
him.
When they got to the towel,
Lisa asked where Robin was. Charlie pointed her out, as he placed Jennifer on
the towel. Lisa nodded her head, as she located Robin with her eyes.
Jennifer told Lisa about
her adventure in the water. "It was scary, Mommy."
"I'm sure it was.
Well, I'm glad you're all right, Jenn. Do you want to take a little nap?"
Jennifer shook her head.
"No, I'm all right. But I'm hungry. Daddy, can we go to the refresher
stand and get food?"
Charlie chuckled and said,
"You mean, refreshment stand?"
"Yeah, that's what I
meant. Can we? Please?"
Charlie looked at his wife
but she shook her head no. "Honey, we brought sandwiches. Why don't you
get Robin and we'll eat?"
"Okay," Charlie
said, standing. He walked slowly over to where Robin was. "Lunch time,
Robin. Come and have your sandwich. You can come back and play some more
afterwards, if you want."
Robin barely looked at her
father. Very casually, she said, "No, I'm not hungry. I'll eat
later." Then she resumed her digging.
Charlie became instantly
annoyed. He did not like when one of the girls disobeyed him. "Robin, I
told you it was lunch time. Now come with me right now, unless you want me to
carry you -- and I don't think you will like what will happen if I have to do
that."
Robin continued to dig.
Charlie waited. "One, two, three. . ."
"Daddy, I'm not
hungry!"
Charlie picked Robin up and
began to carry her to the towel.
"No, Daddy. I wanna
plaaaaay!" Robin shouted.
Charlie walked with Robin
under his arm, administering several sharp swats to her rear along the way.
"OW! Waaaaah!"
Robin yelled and screamed until everyone on the beach stopped and stared at
her.
When they got back to the
towel, Charlie placed her down on it. "If you are that cranky, Robin, you
need a nap after lunch, I think. Now sit down and eat your nice lunch."
"Daddy! OW! That
hurt!" She saw Jennifer staring at her and said, "Don't look at
me!"
Lisa put Robin's sandwich
down in front of her. "NO! I don't wanna sandwich!" Robin shouted as
she threw it. Luckily for her, it landed on the towel. She crossed her arms
over her chest and pouted.
Charlie was past angry.
"Robin! You will be quiet, now. If you aren't hungry, you can lie down and
think about how to behave. One more bit of trouble from you, young lady, and
you are getting a real spanking, right here. Is that clear, Robin
Elizabeth?"
But Robin was past
disobedient; she was downright defiant. She couldn't have stopped at that point
if she wanted to. "I don't wanna lie down. And I don't wanna eat. I wanna
go play!" she exclaimed, as she stood up and started walking back down to
the shore.
Charlie jumped up, ran
after her, and hauled her right back and right over his lap.
"Very well, young
lady, you were warned."
<Swat> <Swat>
<Swat> <Swat> <Swat>
"Daddy! NO! I WANNA
PLAY! OW!" Robin cried and screamed.
Lisa just shook her head.
She could not believe how far Robin had gone and that she hadn't learned her
lesson, yet. Even Jenn could not believe how far Robin had crossed the line.
Charlie lectured Robin as
he spanked. <Swat> <Swat> <Swat> "Playtime <Swat>
is for girls <Swat> <Swat> who can behave. <Swat>
<Swat> You know better <Swat> than to disobey, <Swat>
<Swat> or run away <Swat> when I tell you <Swat> to do
something." <Swat><Swat>
"OW! Daddy!
Stop!" Robin cried.
Several of the beach-goers
were watching this scene and some were mildly amused. A lot of the parents were
shaking their heads and reminding their own children to behave themselves.
But Robin didn't care about
them. She was still angry.
"I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU
SAY!" she shouted.
This was not what Charlie
wanted to hear. He was hoping to be almost through with her spanking. Instead,
he continued. <Swat> <Swat> <Swat> <Swat> <Swat>
<Swat> "You had better <Swat> care <Swat> young lady.
<Swat> <Swat> You are just <Swat> getting yourself
<Swat> in deeper trouble <Swat> with every word. <Swat>
<Swat> Let me know <Swat> <Swat> when you are ready
<Swat> <Swat> to behave." <Swat>
"OW, Daddy! OW! I'm
sorrrrry! Waaaah!"
Charlie heard what he
wanted to hear, but gave her a few extra. <Swat> <Swat>
<Swat> <Swat> "All right then, your spanking is over."
He stopped the spanking,
and rubbed her bottom for a few minutes. Then he lifted her up and pulled her
into his lap and rocked her. He let her cry over his shoulder for a little bit.
Finally, he gently pushed her away from his chest so that she could see his
face.
"What do you have to
say to me, Robin?"
"I'm sorry, Daddddy!
I'm sorry I disobeyed you," Robin said, looking down.
Charlie lifted her face so
that she was looking at him. "Okay. You are forgiven, Robin, but I want
you to spend a little while on the towel, in time out. I love you Robin, but I
can not allow you to defy me and run wild."
"Yes, Daddy, I'm
sorry!" Robin cried. She laid down on the towel and cried herself to
sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Robin woke up, the
beach was almost deserted. "Hey! Where is everyone?" she said.
"It's getting late.
People are going home," Lisa told her. "What time is it?" Robin
asked.
"Well, it's about
3:00. It's not that late, but it looks like it might rain. Daddy is ready to
go, too. Come on, honey. You can eat your sandwich in the car. I'm sure you're
starved."
Robin was having a hard
time waking up. She looked around. "Yeah, I am pretty hungry. Thanks!"
she said, taking her sandwich from her mother. "Oh, good you're up! C'mon,
honey, it's time to go! It's getting late and it looks like rain!" her
dad's voice boomed.
Charlie helped Robin to her
feet. "Where's Jenn?" Robin asked. Charlie pointed over his shoulder,
and Robin looked. A few feet away, she saw her sister playing in the sand. She
ran over to Jenn. "Hey, what'cha making?" Jenn looked up. "Oh,
hey, I thought you were gonna sleep all day. Look!" Jenn started explaining
the who's and what's of the sand castle. Charlie called the girls to come. They
ignored him. He walked over to them with a bunch of stuff in his hands.
"Girls, NOW!" he said. They looked up from their digging. "But,
Daddy, it's just getting real good. Look how cool it is!" Jenn stated.
"Yeah, and I just
started!" Robin whined.
"Robin! No whining!
And Jennifer, I said, no. Now, both of you, let's go! It's been a long day, and
it might start to rain. We'll probably get stuck in traffic. Quit your
complaining and let's get moving!" he spat. The girls looked at each
other. They had both been in trouble while they were at the beach, and didn't
want any more. They both jumped up, and followed Charlie back to where the
blanket was. Lisa handed them each some stuff to carry back to the car.
They put all their stuff in
the trunk. Then Lisa asked Charlie, "Do you think I should wash the girls
off in the shower here, or when we get home?" Charlie frowned. "Lisa,
it's just sand. I don't care at this point if the car gets full of sand. I'm
tired and cranky and I just want to get going. All right?"
"Yes, hon."
"But first, does
anyone need to use the bathroom?" He looked at his girls. All three hands
went up. "Okay, go. I'll go, too."
They all went to use the
bathroom and then met back at the car. Lisa let Robin and Jennifer into the
back seat and made sure their seatbelts were fastened. Then Lisa got into the
passenger-side door and settled herself down. They drove for awhile in silence.
Then the girls started
talking and asking Charlie a half dozen questions. He was becoming very
irritated. "Robin, Jennifer, I want you to settle down and keep quiet. The
traffic is getting heavy, so please don't bother me for a while."
But the girls never
learned. They didn't know when to quit. First Jenn asked, "Are we almost
home, Daddy?"
Robin nudged Jennifer and
said, "No, it's Are we there yet?" and giggled. Their daddy said,
"No, Robin. No, Jennifer. We still have a long way to go, just like we did
five minutes ago when you asked me before." Robin still didn't get it.
"But Daddy, do the game. You know, we say Are we there yet? And you say
not far now."
Lisa turned around and
said, "Robin! Daddy told you not to bother him. Now sit back and be
quiet!"
"Yes, Mommy,"
Robin said.
"Okay," Jenn said
dejectedly.
Charlie frowned. This day
had not turned out the way he had expected it to. All he wanted was to have a
nice family outing at the beach. He said to the girls, "If you two lie
back, maybe you can go to sleep for a bit. That would make it easier for all of
us. I'm afraid I can't play games right now, girls."
"Oh, okay,
Daddy," Jenn said.
A lightbulb went off over
Robin's head. "Hey, Jenn, let's play ghost." "No, I don't
wanna!"
"Come on!"
Jenn shook her head.
"No, you always win spelling games, Robin." But Robin wouldn't take
no for an answer. "Come on, please." "No!"
"Yes! Come on, it'll
make the time go by faster."
"Robin, NO!"
Then it was Charlie's voice
that said, "Robin ! Jennifer! No fighting or squabbling and I mean it! If
I have to stop the car and pull over you will both be VERY unhappy young
ladies. Do I make myself clear?" "Yes, Daddy," Robin said.
"Yes, sir!"
echoed Jennifer.
"Come on, Jenn, just
play ghost with me."
"Oh, all right, Robin,
you start."
Charlie smiled. "Thank
you girls, that's better."
The girls played ghost for
awhile. But after Robin won two out of the three games, Jenn became mad and
didn't want to play anymore. The girls didn't speak for awhile which just made
Charlie happy. At last, there was some peace and quiet. The traffic was
horrendous and Charlie had little to be happy about. The quiet did not last too
long. The girls became bored with looking out the window and started
complaining.
"Daddy, I'm
bored," Jenn said.
Robin agreed. "Me,
too!"
It was then that Lisa
wished they had packed more car toys. But who knew that a forty-five minute
ride would turn into more than two hours?
Charlie made some
suggestions as to what they could do to keep busy. "Have you tried
counting the different kinds of signs? Or a Guessing game?" "Will you
play, Daddy?" Jenn asked. She hated playing just with her sister. Robin
always won these kinds of games.
Charlie sighed, and thought
to himself, "Well, maybe it will stop the whining." "Oh, all right,"
he said aloud.
Robin stated, "Okay,
let's play twenty questions. You start, Daddy." Charlie thought for a
minute. "Okay, I am thinking of something animal." Jennifer asked,
"What letter does it begin with?"
Robin became mad. "No,
Jenn, you can only ask questions that have a yes or no answer. Right,
Daddy?"
Lisa grinned and looked at
her husband and mouthed, "What have you gotten yourself into?"
To the girls, he said,
"That's right, Robin, only yes or no questions. Want to try again,
Jenn?" To Lisa, he mouthed, "It is better than a fight or having to
stop and spank them."
Lisa just shrugged. She was
glad she was not playing. She laid back and closed her eyes, listening to them
playing their game.
Jenn tried, "Does it
begin with a vowel? That was a good question, right, Daddy?"
"Yes it is, and the
answer is no."
Jenn concluded, "Okay,
then it begins with a consonant." "Duh, Jenn."
"Shut up, Robin.
Daddy, Robin's being rude."
"I am not. Anyway,
it's my turn. Daddy, does it hop?" "No, it doesn't hop. Both of you
behave or this game will stop and you will both go in time out."
At that statement, Robin
giggled. "Where are you gonna put us in time out, Daddy? We're in the
car."
Lisa opened her eyes,
turned around, and stated, "Don't be fresh, Robin!"
"Sorry!"
It was Jenn's turn again.
She asked, "Daddy, does it have four legs or two?" "Jennifer!
That's not a yes or no question!" Robin yelled. "Well, sorrrrry! Does
it have four legs? Is that better, Robin?" Jenn whined.
Charlie was instantly
regretting playing this game with the girls. "Any more whining, or
yelling, and you will each turn your face to the car doors and be quiet. That
is how you can be in time out in the car." Charlie paused. Then he said
quietly, "Yes, Jenn, it has four legs."
Robin said, "My turn!
Does it make sounds, Daddy?"
"No," Charlie
answered.
"Is it black and
white?" asked Jennifer.
"That's a dumb
question, Jenn. Daddy, I'm bored, I don't care what your stupid animal
is."
"Robin!" That was
from Lisa. She could not believe the way Robin had been acting up all day.
Charlie growled. "All
right, Robin. If you are so bored, you may turn your face to the door and stay
quiet. We will discuss your rude talk when we get home."
Robin knew what her father
meant by discussing. He didn't mean to talk; he meant to spank. "Daddy,
NO! I'm sorrrry! I'm just bored. Are we almost home?"
"Daddy, you didn't
answer my question," Jenn said quietly. "Is it black and white?"
"Robin, I told you to
be quiet! No, Jennifer, it is not black and white." Charlie was way past
regretting agreeing to play the game. But until they guessed, or Jennifer was
in time out, too, he would continue.
"But Dadddddddy!"
Robin cried. She was beyond antsy. She wanted out of the car. She rolled down
her window and put her hand out. Those were two no-no's that she knew well.
Jenn was lost in thought.
Then she asked, "Is it a kind of a bear?" Robin looked at her sister
and said, "Oh, shut up, Jenn." Charlie saw in his rear view mirror
that Robin had opened her window. He also noted with distaste that her hand was
out of it. "Robin! Get you hand back in, right NOW! That is dangerous, as
I have told you before." Robin brought her hand back in and closed the
window. She was feeling frustrated because she was so bored, and was getting
cranky, and couldn't get out of the car. "Daddy, I'm hot! Can you turn up
the ac?" she cried. "It is already on full, but it doesn't work as
well as it might at this speed. I am getting us home just as fast as I can. Now
be quiet." He turned back to Jenn and said, "No, Jenn, it is not a
bear, although sometimes there is a bare near it."
"Daddy! I don't know!
This is too hard. Just tell me the answer, pleeeeease!"
"Jennifer, you are
getting cranky," Lisa stated. "Why don't you close your eyes and take
a nap?"
"But I wanna know what
the animal was," she whined.
Charlie was past
aggravated. "There is a rest stop up ahead. I think we need to pull over,
don't you, Lisa? There is much too much whining in this car."
Robin and Jennifer knew
instantly that their dad did not need to rest. They knew there would be only
one reason to stop at a rest area, and that was for a spanking.
"No, I'm sorry,
Daddy!" Jenn cried. Then her cries turn into shouts. "JUST TELL ME
WHAT THE ANIMAL WAS AND I'LL GO TO SLEEP!" Then she kicked the seat.
Fortunately for her, she was sitting behind Lisa. If she had been sitting
behind her daddy and kicked his seat, it would have been all over.
"Jennifer! You are not in a good position to be yelling."
Charlie, then, took a deep
breath. "Since you want to know, I was thinking of a chair -- the one in
my bedroom with the Ivory legs and red leather seat. That is animal, but you
know what else it reminded me of."
Lisa put her hand on
Charlie's arm, and warned, "Honey." Jennifer cried, "Daddy!
That's not fair, that's not a real animal! WAAAAAH!"
Robin cried, too.
"Daddy, I wanna go home!"
Charlie knew the situation
was pretty bad at this point. He knew he shouldn't have lost his cool the way
he did. He knew the twins were tired and cranky. He sighed.
"I am getting us home
as quick as I can. I'll give you both one more chance. If you sit back and be
quiet I won't pull off at the rest stop," he paused and turned to Lisa,
"unless you need me to, Honey -- and we will get home a bit faster.
Otherwise, I will pull off and see If I can't encourage you two to
behave. Understand?"
Lisa contemplated her
answer. She was pregnant, after all, and wouldn't mind stopping. Also, maybe
she could get the girls a drink. Also, a walk around would help them stop being
so antsy. "Well, I wouldn't mind using the bathroom, and I'm sure the
twins need to go...do you mind stopping anyway, hon?" she asked Charlie.
"Okay, I will. At this
rate it will take a few minutes yet before we get there. Girls, you would be
well advised to behave until then." Reluctantly, Robin said, "Yes,
Daddy."
"Yes, sir,"
Jennifer echoed.
A few minutes later, Robin
whined, "Mommy, I have to go potty!" Lisa turned to her husband and
said, "See?"
"In just a few
minutes, Robin, we'll be there," Lisa explained. "No, I can't wait. I
gotta go now!"
"Okay, Robin, hang on,
we are almost there," Charlie said. A few minutes later, Charlie pulled up
to the rest stop building. "Now I want you all to do what ever you need
to, and get back to the car so that it doesn't get any later, Okay?"
Lisa answered, "Okay,
hon. Let's go, Robin. Jennifer. Take my hand." Jennifer gave her mom her
hand, but Robin ran on ahead. Lisa caught up to Robin and gave her one hard
slap on her rear. "You're going to regret doing that, young lady,
especially when I tell Daddy. Now let's go!" she said, pulling Robin's
arm.
All three of them used the
restroom, and Lisa changed Jennifer. Afterward, they walked back to the car. Lisa
informed Charlie what Robin did. Charlie frowned at her. "That is the last
straw, Robin. You know better that to run off after Mommy told you to stay with
her."
Charlie picked Robin up and
sat on the edge of his seat with his feet sticking out the car door. He put her
across his lap and gave her ten hard swats over her shorts.
"Those are just a
warm-up, young lady. You will get the rest of your spanking when we get
home."
"Waaaaah! Daddy, no!
I'm sorry! I just had to pee so bad! And mommy was walking so slow, and . .
."
"Robin! I don't want
to hear any whining about it. I will give you a chance to discuss it when we
are home, but not before. Is that clear, young lady?" "Yes,
Daddy," Robin cried.
Everyone got back into the
car then, and Jenn closed her eyes and went to sleep. Robin was sitting on her
knees, rubbing her bottom, and just stared out the window.
Charlie looked in his
rear-view mirror and wondered how she could be sitting on her knees and still
be under her seatbelt. He asked, "Robin, is your seatbelt fastened?"
Robin sat down quickly, and
fastened the seatbelt shut. "Yes, Daddy." "I heard that click,
Robin. You don't want to get in any more trouble today. Now don't take it off
again, and you can apologize for lying and unbuckling when you feel like
it."
Robin finally realized that
she had completely crossed the line. She said, "I'm sorry, Daddy."
Then she closed her eyes and fell right to sleep. Lisa turned and saw that both
girls were asleep. "Finally, they're both asleep." She looked out the
window, and recognized where they were. "Of course, now we're almost
home."
Very dryly, Charlie said,
"Of course. What a ride!" Soon after, Charlie pulled up in front of
their apartment building. It seemed like a thousand years since they had left
that morning. Charlie picked up Jennifer and carried her up in the elevator,
and unlocked the apartment. He went into the twins' room and put her in her
bed. Then he went back for Robin. He did not want Lisa carrying anything heavy
in her condition.
When he reached for Robin,
she woke up. "Are we home, Daddy?" "Yes, Robin, we are home --
finally. Can you walk? Daddy has lots of stuff to carry up."
"Okay," she
answered. She grabbed a few things, and so did Lisa. Charlie was glad he
wouldn't have to make another trip. No one said a word in the elevator, but
when they got inside, Robin said, "I'm sorry I was cranky, Daddy. Too much
sun?"
Charlie frowned. He seemed
to be doing a lot of that lately. "I guess so. Now please go to your room,
Robin. I will be in, in just a minute." Robin looked hurt. But she knew
not to push the envelope any further. "Okay, Daddy," she agreed.
Charlie went into his
bedroom. Lisa was laying on the bed, with her eyes closed. He sat on the bed
next to her. "Honey, do you think I should spank both of them, or just
Robin, or should I let them off because of the circumstances? That was a very
long ride for the two of them." Lisa opened her eyes and looked at her
husband. "Well, I don't know, hon. Maybe you should just let them off. I
mean, you did spank them both already at the beach, and you gave Robin a
warning spanking at the rest area. When Jennifer wakes up, we'll have dinner.
As long as they're good the rest of the evening, you shouldn't have to. What do
you think?"
"I think you're right,
honey. I'll go tell Robin. She'll be relieved. Then I'll tuck her in for a nap,
too."
As Charlie walked toward
the open door, Lisa called out, "And honey, maybe after you tuck Robin in,
you'll come back and tuck me in?"
Charlie turned to Lisa and
said, "Hmm, I think that can be arranged. I'm pretty cranky myself. Maybe
I'll come and lay down for a nap, too." Then he smiled. Lisa smiled, too.
Charlie went back to the
twins' room. He walked over to Robin's bed, where she was sitting and waiting.
He sat down. "Robin, I'd like you to take a nap until dinner time. If you
and your sister behave this evening, there will be no more spankings.
Okay?"
Robin smiled for the first
time in several hours. "Okay, Daddy." Then Charlie pulled back her
covers, and helped Robin get under. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and tucked
her in.
"I love you, sweetie.
See you in a little while," Charlie said. Then he closed the door and left
the room.
The end.
(Author's note: Even though
this story was a collaborative effort, Don wrote the part with the 20 Questions
Guessing Game. I thought it was unfair that his answer was a chair, albeit not
a real animal. He said that the way he used to play the game when he was a
child, was that anything made of animal products counted as 'animal'.
Similarly, anything wooden was considered 'vegetable'. Later, he said, the
family added 'energy' to cover things like radio programs. Personally, I never
would have guessed a chair and didn't think it was fair to do that to two nine
year olds. So, here we differ on something. But that's all right.)
