Rena woke up and instantly
felt that empty feeling inside her. She
looked over at Matt. It wasn't her marriage; everything in that
category was just fine. This was a different part of her life. She
did what she had to in the bathroom, stopped at the kitchen for a drink
and slowly made her way down to the den. In a way she couldn't wait
until she turned on the computer, but in a way she was terrified.
What if there was no word
again? What if he hadn't written?
Rena turned on the
computer, ignoring the screen saver of her kids
flashing across the monitor. She opened her email. There were 4
messages in her inbox. Maybe. Just maybe. Rena kept her fingers
crossed. Maybe this was the day she would hear from him. Maybe this
was the day he had finally written to let her know he was okay.
Rena clicked open the
inbox. One was an advertisement, one was a
notice of failed delivery system, and two were forwards from
well-meaning friends. Well, that was it, another day had gone by, and
no word from Daddy.
'Daddy? Where are you?' Rena wondered
aloud. If Matt heard, he'd
be annoyed, and she'd be mortified, but she was getting to the point
of panic. It wasn't Rena's daddy after all. It was the little one
inside of her whose Daddy was missing. Rena
wasn't sure why she had
a little one inside; she just had always been there. And when Rena
discovered the Internet eight years before and found that her little
one could have a daddy, why, that was the best day of
her life!
But now he was gone. Again. No one knew where he was. No one had
heard from him. And people were looking for him. But in the world
of
the Internet, people could just up and disappear, and it wouldn't
matter.
Rena envisioned what he
would say *this time* when he came back.
"Oh, I'm so sorry I worried you, but this came up, and blah, blah,
blah..."
Maybe this time Rena
wouldn't be so forgiving. Maybe this time she
would be ready with "I'm sorry isn't going to be good enough. I
think someone ELSE needs a spanking!"
Rena laughed as she thought
about his reaction. "Oh? Um, I, well, I
can see why you might think that, but, uh..."
She imagined him lying
across her lap. She had a big wooden spoon in
her hand. She'd spank him until the tears stopped. Her tears, not
his. Yes, that's what she would do. When
she heard from him again.
If she heard.
The end.
