Oils and their Properties
Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis)
Lavender is a volatile oil that is known for its unique scent. It is commonly used to fragrance drawer satchets because of its soothing (and insect repelling) properties. It is a popular oil, and one of the few that can be used in their undiluted state. It reduces stress, as it is a mood uplifter and can soothe troubled sleep. Medically, it reduces inflammation and improves digestion. It can also heal skin problems, and generally has a very purifying effect on the body.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
This oil is recognized for its cooling properties. It is also a nerve stimulant that can ease physical pain, and refresh and energize the body. It also improves digestion and increases appetite. It is thought to provide inspiration because of its ability to clear the mind and improve memory.
Rose (Rosa centifolia and Rosa damascena)
This is a very calming oil, with a pleasant aroma often used in the perfume industry, possibly because of reputation as an aphrodisiac. It is also known for its ability to soothe menstrual and menopausal problems. It is a sedative, and can be used to ease the mental pains of shock or grief, providing calmness.
