Salween River Band was founded by two musician brothers, Moe Nyunt and Thiri Nyunt, in the Summer time of 1998. The members are their two ethnic friends, Paul Laphai (Kachin National) and Soe Moe Oo (Karen National). Ko Maung Win had joined the band in June, 2002. The name of their band, Salween River, is one of the two longest rivers in their country, Burma (Myanmar), and has suffered war burden for more than five decades. It flows through various states such as Shan, Karen, Karenni (Kayah) and Mon, and is a part of the borderline of Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand. The founders of this band, Moe and Thiri, have more than twenty years of experience in music since they were the key players of a professional music band in Burma, named The Dynamites. They played the background music for movies, music albums, TV series, live-concerts, and many other events. Before they founded Salween River band, they had played background music for most Burmese celebrities who came to visit the United States such as Sai Htee Saeng, Than Naing, Lashio Thein Aung, Soe Thu, Nwe Yin Win, Kai Zar, Poe Darli Thein Dan, etc... They played together with the other renowned musicians Ko Ronnie Kong and Ko Thein Dan (Myanmar Pyae) on many concerts. Moe and Thiri named their band as "Salween River" to dedicate thousands of unknown youths, not only Burmese but also ethnic youths, who lost their lives along the Salween river. Thiri said, "they all are Martyrs". He added that Salween River should be a symbol of national unification and internal peace in Burma. The members of this band have rights to play individually with any other music lovers or other professional musicians. Most musicians like freedom, they hate restriction or strictness, said Thiri. |
