Appolonia/Apolloni

APOLLONI is a name that has been in use from the time of the ancient Greeks and it probably derives from one of their gods, Apollo. One Apolloni descendant has suggested that some variations of the surname may have derived from a Roman Emperor, especially in the areas of Rome and Vicenza where it is prevalent.  For centuries, nuns and priests have upheld the custom of naming orphans in honor of the saints.  An Appolonia descendant tells of his great-grandfather, who lived in an Italian orphanage, he was named after St. Appolonia.

Versions of the Apolloni name are mentioned in Greek, Roman, Jewish and Christian writings (one example: the Holy Bible). It is a name associated with famous and infamous people throughout time.

In the 20th century, the Apolloni name can be found in Italy, throughout Europe, the United States of America, Canada, in Central and in South America.Appolonia is only one variation of the surname Apolloni. During my research of past civil records and through recent contact with descendants, I have found several spelling variations; Apolonia, Apolonio, Apollonii, Appollonio, Appollino and Apollini.

Note:   Several languages (Italian, Greek, Spanish, French, etc.) are derived from old Latin and contain the words "di, de, da  ..........   li, le, lo" .
" di, de, da " =   from, of                 " li, le, la, lo " =   the
You will often find these words used in names.   At one time they were probably used to describe a person's parent, their personal traits or a place of origin.   Di Luca = son of Luke;
Di Appolonia = son of Appolonia, Di Abruzzi = from Abruzzi.  La Rocca = the rock.   The endings (masculine form= "o", feminine form= "a", no particular gender, plural= "i" ) have been interchanged throughout time depending on the scribe/clerk recording it.  Eventually, the words and the names may combine - the same way words become shortened (contracted) in the English language.   DiAppolonia, di Appolonia, D'Appolonia, Di Appolonia, Lo Appolonio, L'Appolonio are all forms of the same root name; Appolonia (Apolloni).  A different example is Della Rocca = of/from the rock.  Sometimes the prefix or suffix of a name is "lost" or "dropped" D'Apolonia may become Apolonia, D'Apoloni or D'Apolon .  Occasionally names are combined into single words and capitalization is no longer used within the name (Diappolonia, Dappolonia, Dellarocca, etc.).

Through interviews and civil records, I have found that many descendants
