| Acclimation of Your New Fish. Now that you have made it home with your new fish it's time to start acclimating him. There are a few different methods of acclimating fish. This is the method of acclimation I use myself, and I have had much success using this method. (Remember it's best to quarantine your new fish first.) Floating your new fish. Acclimating is simply placing the bags you brought the fish home in, and placing them into the tank. This allow's the water temperature in the bag to change to the same temperature as the water in your fish tank. I suggest that you turn your tank lights off when floating the fish bags. This is less stressful to the fish when acclimating. It is less stress on the new fish, and less stress on the fish in the tank. Float your new fish for about 20-30 minutes...any longer than that can be harmful to the fish. The longer the fish stay's in the bag, the less oxygen it has in the water. Remove the bags from the water, and grab yourself a bucket and net. NEVER put the water from the bag into your good clean water!!! Doing that would risk infecting your tank with bad water. Heres how to place your new fish. Place the net over the bucket..Open Bag carefully..pour fish into net, and water into bucket...place fish into tank. Keep an eye on him after putting him in the water. Take note of his behavior, and the behavior of your other fish towards him. . "SaltyDog says" Mean Fish Suck!!! If your new fish is getting picked on....try moving your live rock around. This confuses the the other fish, and takes the attention off the new fish. Always make sure the fish you buy are compatable with each other. HOME |
