FAQs

Is this a dance class or a fitness class?
Well, it's kind of a dance class where the emphasis is on using your body in a fun way to great music while you burn lots of calories. The isolations and styling are great for developing flexibility and control in your shoulders and core. Footwork combinations improve your balance while working your lower body and your brain.

What's the class format?
It's all freestyle, no partnering. But what you learn can be applied to partner dancing.

Do I need any salsa experience?
Nope. Every class goes over the basic step. But the first class of each month teaches the basic with the most detail. The rest of the month the basic is reviewed more quickly. The more often you come to class, the easier the basics will be, and the more fun you can have.

What if I have some salsa experience?

You will still be challenged by the pace and new footwork. And you will learn lots of sexy body stying to make your dancing more fun for you and your partners!

What clothes should I wear?
Whatever you can move comfortably in. Pants are better than skirts.

What shoes should I wear?
Here are the features you are looking for: low or no heels, a sole that lets you pivot on a wood floor, shoes that stay firmly on your feet (no flip flops or open backs), and comfort. This is part fitness class, so I don't recommend high heels.

The very best shoes are jazz sneakers. They give you support and allow you to pivot on the wood floor. Regular sneakers are okay but they make it hard to pivot and will put stress on your knees. Low-heeled, leather soled shoes that stay on your feet are good.

If you are not sure, feel free to bring more than one pair and try them out in class.

You can buy jazz sneakers or lightweight jazz shoes locally. They are worth it, and you can wear them with pants to clubs,on nights you don't want to wear heels (but don't wear your dance shoes on the street.)  Here's where you can get them:

What if I'm a guy?
We like guys! Please join us if you are ready to shake and shimmy. We do lots of footwork and styling that is appropriate for the masculine dancer. But all of the body work and isolations will give you core flexibility and control and add sabor to your moves.

What's sabor?
Flavor!
