| GENERAL INFORMATION The Skye Terrier originated centuries ago on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Skyes were bred as working terriers whose function was to hunt fox, badger and otter. The Skyes short, sturdy legs were well suited for digging and the double coat served as protection from injury and bad weather. Their scenting abilities and agile, well muscled bodies enabled them to locate their prey underground and retrieve them from their burrows. BREED PERSONALITY The Skye Terrier has stamina, strength and courage. He is good tempered, loyal, protective and sensitive. The Skye is friendly and happy with those he knows, but he is reserved and cuatious with strangers. A Skye usually prefers to make his own advances and may resist being petted, picked up, or groomed by anyone whom he considers a stranger. The loyalty and devotion of a Skye, however, is surpassed by any other breed. He is a delightful companion and alert protector of home and master. The Skye has an acute sense of hearing and will hear someone or something approaching long before we do. CARE REQUIREMENTS The long straight double coat needs frequent attention or it will mat. From an early age, the Skye should be taught to relax while his grooming is being preformed. The adult coat tends to pick up every piece of leaf or twig matter in the yard. The puppy's coat is quite different from the adult coat. It will take several years before the adult coat develops completely. The Skye is happy living in the house with his master but enjoys a romp around the yard for his daily exercise. The Skyes has an average appetite and should be fed a well balanced, quality diet. Although the Skye is generally a healthy dog, his back needs careful surveillance, therefore they need to be discouraged from jumping and walking down stairs. IDEAL OWNERS People that can provide the right facilities. The Skye can live in a flat provided they have enough exercise, nonetheless a garden is preferable. The Skye Terrier is a good dog to keep in a family with children, provided they show him respect. Skyes are fine with children if they are raised with them. They do not appreciate their ears, whiskers or tail pulled and will let it be known, recommended - older children that understand this. Pets like rabbits and guinea pigs are considered as prey. Other dogs are fine, but still they enjoy their space. a dog that will not crowd a Skye is ideal. |
