In June 2001 I became a Chemo Angel. A member of the braintumor list I belong to because of my Uncle David's brain tumor had added the link for Chemo Angels in her signature line. Being the web addict I am, I follwed the link and found this wonderful website!
I'll give you a little background information first. Since my
Uncle's diagnosis of a malignant brain tumor in March I had been spending alot of time(in fact all my free time, monitoring the web and the brain tumor list (www.virtualtrials.com).I was beginning to feel a calling. This calling was to do something special with my life to help others. It becomes apparent after being involved with a group like the brain tumor list, that life is so precious and those of us that can SHOULD be involved with the business of helping others, at least that's what I got from it. Now, I'm not a nurse, I'm only a hairstylist with a lot of time on my hands but I wanted to contribute SOMETHING! When this link came across my path, I KNEW God was whispering in my ear, "Marie, this is for you!".
I followed the link and came to Chemo Angels. Chemo Angels is a program with the motto of "brightening patients lives throughout their treatment". This is done pretty anonymously, although my patient and I have emailed a few times. Our job as Chemo Angels is to send cards, thoughtful little gifts and encouragement through the mail. I filled out the Chemo Angel application and shortly received my 1st patient, a 28 yr old woman with breast cancer. (Due to the anonymity of the program I will not use her name nor her location). It's my job each week to send things to her. I've had so much fun doing this I cannot even tell you!! I just hope that what I send truly does brighten her life, because i'm sure this was not the life she ordered!!
I send all kinds of things. Sometimes I inundate her with cards, sometimes its gifts. The best thing I think I did was to do a "Xmas in July" theme. I sent her a box full of little gifts for her, a Blockbuster gift certificate to her hubby and presents for the 4 kids. I even sent a "Slip n Slide" for her kids!!! One week I designated it "anything you want week" and told her she could have her choice of balloons, flowers, chocolates, anything...she picked chocolates and I sent her an online gift certificate to Godiva.com. What fun I had!!! She ended up getting herself hot chocolate and some cookies, what SHE wanted. I also want to say that I probably spend more money than what you need to spend(i'm not really good with budgeting). I see things and thats what she gets  :)  You can easily angel your patient for a couple dollars a week.Anyhow, I say this not to "toot" my own horn, I say this to give others the inspiration to do what I'm doing and to let them know how much fun it is!!
Do you hear God whispering to you???? Follow this link:
Chemo Angels and have fun!!!
