| Spun-dubbed Deerhair Using a Nor-Vise: The NV (Nor-Vise) Caddis | |||||||
| The ability to dub very coarse materials is one attribute of the Nor-Vise fly tying system. This is taken to a whole new level when the concept of dubbing deerhair is considered. Using a Nor-Vise makes working with deerhair in this manner easy, fast and the results can be quite different in appearance than any other dubbing currently available. The technique works best if there is a fine fur present in combination with the deerhair. This can either be the naturally occuring underfur or you can clean the deerhair of the underfur and then mix the resulting hair with rabbit fur. The latter technique results in especially neat results when the underfur and hair are in contrasting but complementing colors such as black and orange or purple and olive. A note about the wing of the completed fly: upon close inspection you can notice Krystal Flash incorporated in the wing. It is actually mixed in with the deerhair so the hair and Flash are homogenous. Then the mix is stacked to even the tips and tied on in a regular "bubble head" fashion. This little bit of added flash in the wing really makes this fly stand out, which is desireable because flies tied with the spun-dubbed deerhair bodies float very low in the water. The ratio is approximately 2:1 deerhair to Krystal Flash. Please feel free to e-mail if you have questions. [email protected] |
