BIOGRAPHY:
First space flight in 1983 aboard the shuttle Challenger. Deployed communication satellites for Canada and Indonesia.
Born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles, California.
At first she wanted to become a professional tennis player.
Second flight also aboard Challenger. Deployed Earth Radiation Budget satelite, conducted scientific observations of earth, and demonstrated potential of satelite refueling by astronauts.
Attended Stanford University earning Bachelor of Arts degree in Engish, Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Masters degree in Physics, Ph.D. in Physics.
Training for a third space flight interrupted with Challenger accident.Served as member of Presidential Commission investigating incident.
Selected for astronaut training in 1978. Worked in mission control as capsule communicatory for two missions.
Assigned to NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. as assistant to the NASA Administrator for long-range planning.

Created NASA's Office of Exploration and produced a report on the future of the space program entitled "Leadership and America's Furture in Space."
Assigned for three space flights aboard Challenger. Third flight canceled because of Challenger accident.

Challenger accident.


Currently a physicist and a member of the faculty at the University of California, San Diego, as a physics professor. Also a member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology. Former Director of the California Space Science Institute, a research institute of the University of California.
