They'd spoken their beliefs, and they believed the same thing. There would be
more to say, much more, but they needed to speak their bodies first.
On the dirty floor of his jail cell, he'd stroked between her clothed legs and
it was so much less than they deserved and yet so sweet he nearly lost his
resolve. It was all he could do not to pull off the road once he was alone with
her in the car, fugitive status be damned. Their hands made love on the seat
between them, entered the tender hollows between each other's fingers to find
the delicate sensations there, visited the softness of the insides of wrists.
Only once had he dared to raise that hand to his lips again, then. Her knuckles
tasted like tears.
In the motel bathroom, he'd showered for hours. She washed his back with a
cloth that felt soft to his skin. When she came around in front of him and took
him in her mouth, he went fast, embarrassingly fast--so much so that his cry
bore more anguished frustration than release. "No," she'd murmured, still at
his feet with her arms around his thighs, the water raining on the back of her
hair and her shoulders until it cascaded off her breasts. "No, I wanted that;
please don't take it away from me." He crouched and let her kiss it all better,
but the shame of it drove him into jeans and a t-shirt and onto the floor at
the foot of the bed even as she lingered damp, reclining in her white robe.
She kissed him again when he came to her and they lay entwined and he wanted no
words but only to crawl inside her completely, but he had to, he had to ask
before he could.
"Scully, do we...I mean we never, it never...is that why, in the shower,
before...do we need to be...careful?" And he looked so serious that she had to
laugh, just for a second.
"Why, Mulder, are you asking if we need contraception? I've never known you to
be so coy before." She kissed his forehead, and stroked his cheek until his
grin matched her own, then faded hers.
"I told you that I do not accept the idea that, ten years from now, human life
on this planet as we know it will cease to exist and that there is nothing we
can do to change that. But neither can I say now that I would choose to bring
another child into this world at this time, knowing what I know and after..."
She closed her eyes against it. "I can't even say it, Mulder. I can't even say
their names right now, it hurts too much..." She tightened her hold on him and
he on her and they both wept, but only a little--these tears were to be
rationed and doled out over time.
She dried her eyes on the hem of her sleeve and waited until he sniffled his
readiness to continue. "So, yes, Mulder, I think that tomorrow we will need to
make a decision together as to how we want to deal with that possibility. But
for tonight, I want there to be no barriers, no boundaries between us. So if
you're willing, let's let the truth wait for tomorrow. Beyond the fact that
conception is unlikely, I have faith that we are here tonight because someone
was watching over us. And I trust that if this were the wrong choice, that the
one or ones watching would somehow have told me so and I would somehow have
heard."
She saw the twinkle in his eye and raised him a frown, and the names of some
who might be watching with particular interest remained unsaid; he kissed her
instead. Mirth gave way to urgency, but she licked the urgency from his lips
with her tongue until all he had left was acceptance, no less passionate for
all its lack of hurry. They kissed with lips and noses and foreheads and eyes
and smiles, hands playing with hair, their bodies snugged together warm and
cocooned but not demanding, on their sides in the middle of the bed.
A long time later he raised himself on an elbow and slid his other hand along
the opening of her robe until it encountered the belt, and pulled gently to
release the single knot. He smoothed his hand along the center of her chest and
belly, visiting pale skin but not yet needing her breasts, and she watched him,
smiling. "What?" he asked, his lips too soft to form an actual smile just then.
"I like to look at you. Take off your shirt so I can see more," she requested,
and he did. He leaned in, compelled to kiss her again, but this time he was
above her and her robe fell open so that his chest brushed against her bare
breasts. She circled her arms around him and pulled him more firmly onto her,
interrupting a kiss to tell him, "I've missed your weight on me." He settled
more fully onto her body then, just barely rocking against her, ignoring his
own erection but for the sea change it made in her breath against his face.
His hand replaced his pelvis drawing soft, tiny circles upon her flesh, her
outcry at the loss of his weight drowned out and his "Let me touch you, please"
made redundant by her sighs. He brought her to warm quiet bliss this way, with
his fingers on her skin's surface not even venturing inside yet, delving only
after that one sigh that was bigger than the others and quivered on the way
down.
Her hand came up to touch his face and he kissed her finger as she drew it
across his lips, kissed the tip of her index finger while his own caressed her
inside. He blew a kiss to her lips, then bent to kiss her clit, sucking it
gently into his mouth, inhaling her fresh-baked bread and spices scent. His
tongue after all this time not tentative but more delicate than he'd ever been
with her--he nestled it against her as though he planned to stay a while,
feeling the blood rush underneath the surface more demanding than he was,
seeming to want to coax each of her nerve endings awake and alive individually.
Her breath took on an undertone that climbed not louder but higher, and when he
finally sucked her into his mouth again she stopped breathing altogether for
what seemed like a long time.
She came back to earth and he came back to her and, entwined again, he let her
unbutton his jeans with dizzy fingers; somehow he escaped his clothes without
seeming to rise or leave their embrace. She took his cock in her hand and
stroked him slowly while his fingers wandered absently along the side of one
breast, barely brushing the nipple. Their eyes kissed, and their lips.
He dropped his eyes away from her then, pretending after a second that it was
her breasts that had caught his attention only she knew better. "What?" she
asked, and when he didn't meet her eye right then she added, "Mulder?" with
concern but no accusation, still holding him though her hand stopped moving.
He shook his head. "I can't tell you."
"Mulder, please. Whatever it is, it's ours, not yours. Don't let it come
between us--no barriers tonight." She took her hand from his cock and slid it
across his cheek and then behind his back, nestling him against her and holding
him with her whole body.
"But that's it, I'm afraid it will." But he pulled to hold her tighter as well.
"Just say it, Mulder," she breathed.
'It's..." His voice creaked with effort. "I imagined this so many times,
imagined it all different kinds of ways but kept coming back to this one image
of how I wanted it to be when you and I came together again, and it's been just
like that, just like I imagined it tonight, Scully, so soft..." He stroked her
cheek but kept her close, so much so that they could barely focus on each
other's faces. "But...I thought...I thought at first that it would be much
sooner, a few weeks or a few months til I'd see you again, and that the reason
it would be so soft is because I'd have to be gentle with you..." His lips kept
moving, but the words were lost in his tears and her low moan, "William."
"God, Mulder," and the bed shook with their sobs. He pulled her crushed to him
and rolled on top of her completely, feeling if he let her go at all that she'd
take it as condemnation so he smothered her instead. And after a moment even
that didn't seem close enough, and he slid his arm down her body so he wouldn't
be letting go even for a second, and used his hand to slip himself inside her.
Surprised, she hitched her tears, but neither of them moved.
"Scully, I love you. So much," he rumbled just above a whisper. "And I love my
son more than I ever thought was possible. I would die to protect either of
you. But, I left William when he was just a few days old because we thought
he'd be safer without me..." He blotted his tears on her shoulder, still
unwilling to let go of her. "And if in order for him to grow up safe I could
never see him again, I'd hate it but I'd stay away. But after being apart from
you, I found out that when it comes to you, I'm selfish. I know there've been
times when I tried to get you to leave me because I thought you'd be safer that
way, and even though this last time I left mostly for William's sake it seemed
maybe you'd be better off as well. But the truth is, yes, I would die for you
but I will risk your safety--your life--to have you with me. I want William's
future, but I want you."
She was silent through his words and for a moment after and he was about to go
on when her voice came, muffled a bit into his neck. "Make love to me," she
said. He started to move, then, very slowly at first as though they might have
fused together after that long time of being still inside her, then faster but
still so gentle; snugged tight underneath him she rocked in encouragement. They
filled in tiny increments until each overflowed in a climax not explosive but
inevitable, powerful as ocean. Their faces still tear-stained but their eyes
clear, they saw each other.
He finally eased partway off her body, but kept his legs tangled with hers and
his arms enfolding her.
"Scully, we don't have to decide this right now, but if at some point we do
decide that William can be with us, there isn't a place he could be on this
planet, or even off it, where we wouldn't find him."
"I know," she said.
