Nathaniel's Birth Story
Giving birth to Nathaniel was one of the most wonderful, memorable things that I have ever done. Nathaniel came into the world nine days late on June 7th, 2001. It is a day that we will never forget - the day we were blessed with a son!
We went to bed on Wednesday night wondering if this baby was ever going to decide to be born. I went into labor in the early morning hours on Thursday. I woke up around 1:45 from the pain of contractions. I went and sat indian-style in our recliner and dozed between each contraction. I didn't want to start timing the contractions yet because I knew that the baby was a long way off. I did start timing the contractions around 5:00 and they were coming around every 4-6 minutes. At this point I was still trying to doze in-between the contractions. At 7:30 I called the dr. and spoke to the dr. on call. My contractions were still coming about every 4-5 minutes. The dr. on call said that since this was my first baby and that we lived so close to the hospital to wait a few more hours until my dr.'s office opened. At 8:15 I
decided that we should call my dr. and not wait any longer. My dr. asked me several questions and suggested that I come in and get checked out. I wasn't sure if we should go to the hosptial because I didn't want to get sent back home. I decided to give myself a "test" by walking through my next contraction. I figured that if I could easily walk through the contraction there was no need to go the hosptial. As soon as my next contraction hit, I started to walk around. That didn't last long. I ran into the bathroom and threw up. That was enough convincing for me. Del grabbed the suitcase and out the door we went.
We arrived at the hospital around 9:30. We then proceeded down to admission. After we had completed admission, we went to the maternity ward. I was officially checked into the hospital at 10:20. My nurse checked me out and I was surprised to learn that I was already 6 cm dialated. The dr. showed up soon after and broke my water. My labor progressed rapidly from there. I started pushing at 11:50, and our little miracle was here at 12:05 p.m! We had been blessed with a son. A big healthy 8 lb 3.5 oz baby boy!
Giving birth to our son was very satisfying. I was able to complete my goal of having natural childbirth (no pain medication). I couldn't have done it without Del. He was the most wonderful labor coach. He was very supportive and talked me through each contraction.
The hospital where Nathaniel was born was very nice. It was brand new - only about a year old. Both the labor and postpartum room were private. They were more like hotel room than hospital rooms. Nathaniel gave us a few scares in the hospital. Since he was born so quickly, he had a lot of stuff stuck in his lungs. It took a few days for him to spit it all up. I will never forget the first time I held Nathaniel in my arms. It was instant love and the most wonderful feeling. He was so precious and breathtaking. I remember looking at him in complete awe! He is our miracle - the greatest blessing of our life!
