In Olden days Salem was called as Seelam that means a cool place.  it is a well known place in Tamilnadu Situated to the south west of Chennai.  This place is Famous for the Production & manufactruing of coffee, sarees, steels, Mango and Sago.

In Rainy season excess water from Yercaud flows through the City namely Thirumanimutharu.   Mettur Dam which is 50 km away from salem is biggest dam in Tamilnadu, which can generate 50 - 100 Kw by Hydropower generation. 

The Factories in and around salem is related with sago manufacturing, Textiles Mills, Burn Standard and Tamilnadu Magnasite and SAIL a Govt of India Undertaking is having a Stell Plant.

Exporting of Silks sarees, Steel, Cofee and mangos to many asian countries and some of the European Countries. 

Sight seeing places are Yercaud hills, Mettur Dam, Kandashram & Pragadeeswarar Temple in Tharamangalam.  A Speciality of this City is Covered with hills in all the sides.
