Gas Boiler and heating system check up 1; Clean boiler(remove front cover and vacuum around burners, gas valve, jacket and floor area.(replace front cover) 2; Remove flue pipe from boiler and vacuum inside of boiler and flue pipe (replace any rusted flue pipe) 3; Check for and leaking shut off and relief valves 4; Check radiators valves for leaks(if new valves are needed for steam systems there is no need to drain any water from the boiler to replace the any valves) just shut off the boiler switch. For hot water heating systems you will have to drain the water from the boiler to replace any valves then bleed all the radiators in the house ( should to call a plumber for this kind of repair. 5; Check the type of circulator pump you have for hot water heating systems old style have oil ports on the pump and should be oiled ( just a few drops on each side of the motor and fill the bearing assembly port (bearing assembly port if away from the motor and close to the piping (see diagram below) 6; Replace or add radiators(before the cold weather) 7; Replace or clean thermostats( old style thermostats just move the dial up and down a few times and vacuum around to remove any dust 8; Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide dectors in boiler room
Hot water heater check up
1 Close gas valve on the heater by turning the dial to the off position ( for electric heaters shut switch,circuit breaker or remove fuse 2 Shut cold water valve feeding the heater -open a hot water faucet to make sure the valve closed all the way if not close the main valve for the house and replace the hot water heater shut off valve 3 Drain about 5 gallons of water from the heater from the drain valve on the bottom 4 Check the relief valve (if any water has been leaking from it replace it ) 5 For gas heaters remove the burner cover and vacuum by the burner 6 Close the hot water faucet you opened 7 Open the cold water valve feeding the heater 8 For gas heaters turn the dial to the pilot position and press and hold the red button light the pilot and continue to hold the button down for about one minute then release the button and make sure the pilot stays on( for electric heaters open switch,circuit breaker or replace fuse 9 place the burner cover back on the heater 10 Turn the dial on the heater to the on position 11 Open a hot water faucet to remove any air in the pipes ( see diagram below)
