Cleaning a sink , tub or shower drain
Cleaning a clogged sink drain 1. Empty the water from the sink first, then loosen the clean out plug on the bottom of the trap and let water drain into a pail.( on traps with no clean out plug loosen the nut on the u-bend part of the trap and swing the trap to the side to drain water into a pail) 2.Using a snake, push the snake cable into the drain side of the trap and start to feed the cable by pushing into the pipe a little at a time(when using a electric snake set the switch to the foward position to feed the cable in the pipe.(when using a hand snake turn handle to the right-clockwise 3.Most snakes have about 15' to 25' of cable, try to use all the cable 4.When removing the snake cable from the drain pipe Set electric snake in reverse-hand snake turn to the left-counter clockwise. 5. Replace the trap plug or tighten the nut on the u-bend part or the trap 6. Run some water in the sink to check if you have cleared the stoppage. If not you will have to snake the drain again. (when snaking a drain line you have to make sure that the cable goes down into the drain pipe and not up the vent line. Check the diagram click diagrams on top of page For cleaning tub drains -remove over flow plate and push shake cable down into drain follow directions above. For shower drains remove strainer and push snake cabe down into drain pipe . follow directions above
Main house drain cleaning & maintenance
Main house drain cleaning and Maintenance 1. Keeping the main house drain clean The main house drain usually builds up grease by the house trap and where the fresh air tee connects to the trap. To clean the trap and area where the fresh air tee connects A. Remove the inside house trap plug(use rubber gloves) B. Clean the u-bend part of the trap with a small scraper (a old long handle salad spoon works well) C. Clean inside the fresh air tee D. Flush the line clean by flushing a toilet E. Replace the house trap plug. (Filling a sink with hot water and dishwashing soap will help keep drain lines clean) Cleaning a main stoppage 1. First find out if the stoppage is on the inside or outside of the house trap. A. Remove the outside house trap plug, if you don't get any water flowing out of the trap! the stoppage is on the inside of the trap.If you get water flowing from trap go to step C B. Try pushing a snake around the u-bend of the trap,if that does not work remove the inside house trap plug and snake the main house drain (snake from trap to back of house) C. Snake drain from house trap to outside sewer 3. Sewer and drain cleaning can sometimes be done by using a blow bag (rubber attachment for a garden hose that uses water pressure to clear the blockage) The blow bag expands against the pipe wall so the water can not back up and then the water from the garden hose can build up pressure to break thru the stoppage. Check the diagram below for a house trap and connections ( some stoppages are caused by broken pipes or roots in pipes and should be cleaned by a sewer and drain cleaning contractor)
