TRAVELING WITH YOUR PET OR NOT
by Arvee Salazar
They're fluffy and furry. They are cute and funny. And best of all, they are our companions and are considered to be man's best friend. Who I am talking about you wonder. I am talking about our favorite home buddies, our pets.
For many, pets are regarded as essential life companions. Yes, they're there to amuse us and to play with us when we have nothing else better to do; but pets serve a bigger purpose in our lives than that. Studies conducted in the united States reveal that pets are a big factor in the extension of one's life. That's why people, most especially old people, are encouraged to have pets whether it's a cat, a dog, a rabbit, a bird or even a turtle. The companionship, presence and even juts the soft touch of their fur (except for the turtle) can contribute to the lengthening of our lifespan.
Serious pet owners take the time and effort to learn how to care for their funny critters. They groom and feed them and play with them, too, to keep them happy and in tiptop shape. But what if we must go away for a business trip or a vacation? How do we ensure our pets are well taken cared of?
To bring or not to bring
If you are a pet owner planning to leave home for a few days or more, the decision to take your pet along or leave him behind is an important one for both you and your pet buddy. While it may be tempting to take your furry friend with you, keep in mind that some animals are not suited for travel because of temperament, illness, or physical impairment. If you have any doubts about whether it is appropriate for your pet to travel, talk to your veterinarian.
Once you have decided to take your pet with you on your trip, you have to devote extra time to prepare your journey. First, you?ll need to pack all the supplies needed to keep your pet comfortable while he is away from the familiar comforts of your home. You also have to familiarize yourself with guidelines and restrictions concerning pets on airlines, place of destination and hotels etc.
When Fido Stays
If you have decided to leave your pet behind, consider your options: entrust your pet with friends and/or relatives who'll devote time and care to it; board your pet in a pet kennel; or hire a pet sitter.
If you have opted to entrust your pet with your friend or relative, it is best to have him or her take your pet home, especially if it's a dog or a cat. These pets get lonely when left alone in the house, and some may even get violent and destroy things. Be sure to give your friend/relative exact instructions on feeding and grooming your pet. If your pet is a fish, turtle, rabbit or the like, it is okay to leave them in the house. Just give your friend/relative a spare key to your home for them to be able to feed your companions.
If you choose to board your pet, get reference and inspect the kennel first before entrusting your animal. Big pet stores nowadays provide kennels, too, for pets. Boarding costs P100-250 a day, depending on what pet you have.
If you opt to hire a pet sitter, interview the candidates and check their references. You should also take into consideration the way your pet behaves when they are around. You might hire a pet sitter that your pet doesn?t like or is not very comfortable with.
Whatever options you choose, your pet should be up-to-date on all vaccinations and be of sound health. If you arrange for someone to care for your pet while you are away, provide the pet sitter important numbers and information, like where you can be reached, the name and telephone number of your vet, and your pet?s medical and dietary needs. Exact instructions should always be given to the person in charge of your pet buddy. Always remember that whatever decision you will make, your pet?s well-being should be your first priority.
