The First Day:
When you arrive at Hillcrest P.S. for your first day on Tuesday, September 5th, the bell will ring for entry for everyone at 9:00.  Teachers will be outside to direct grade 6 and 7 students to the gymnasium.  Class lists will be read aloud and you will be taken to homeroom by your homeroom teacher.  Be prepared for a full day of work and getting to know the school.  Grade 7 students will have a locker assigned.  All students will get a timetable, etc.  Teachers will give you some basic supplies and will let you know about other items you might need.  You will recieve many handouts and forms on the first day.  Be prepared for all the "newness" you will experience.  In a few days, you will feel like you've been a part of the routine forever.

Lunchtime:
Our lunchtime policy is that students are supervised either at school or at home for lunch.  We discourage students going to the local plazas for lunch.  This is not a supervised area and we cannot guarantee the safety, whereabouts or actions of students if you leave school property.  Chocolate and white milk are on sale daily for 50 cents.  You need a healthy, nutricious lunch each day.  Remember to bring a lunch on the first day of school.

Timetable:
We are on a 6 day cycle with six 45 minutes periods of classes each day....(36 periods per cycle).  Your homeroom teacher is generally also your core teacher (language arts, history, geography... 12 periods/cycle).  Your other subjects will be mathematics (6 periods), English for F.I students/Core French for English students (5 periods), guidance (1 period), science (5 periods), gym/health (3 periods), art (2 periods).  We suggest that students keep a copy of their timetable at home, in their locker and in their binder.

Staff:
We have a wonderful, caring staff at Hillcrest.  Our teachers work hard to provide a program which is rich in experiences for all of our students.  Students in grades 6 - 8 will recieve music and art instructions on rotary.  We have a guidance counselor who is available if you have any problems you need to work out. Homeroom teachers are also wonderful  mentors and are responsive to your needs.  Respect is a two-way street and we expect all staff to be treated the right way you would like to be treated.

Extra-curricular:
All students are given a house-league colour upon joining the Hillcrest team. Students pick up points for themselves and for their houseleague colour by participating in many extra curricular offerings and activities that will be provided at Hillcrest.  Many of the activities take place at lunchtime because of the large number of bussed students. CATCH THE SPIRIT and be prepared to take a part in activities, teams and clubs.  Your years here will only be as enjoyable as you make them.

Code of Conduct:
Our motto is:

At Hillcrest we C.A.R.E. (Care And Respect Eachother)
We used this code to develop a set of students' rights and students' responsibilitities which you will find in your student's planner.  We expect everyone in the school to be treated with respect.  Individual incidents are dealt with immediately and may invovle parents.  Our basic policiy is "Hands Off" so as not to violate the personal rights of anyone in the school.  We respect our enviroment an the personal property of others.
We will not tolerate disrespect.  Our main concern is for the safety and personal well-being of all of our students and staff members.  A complete Code of Conduct is in the student planner  and in the parent handbook, both of which will be distributed in September.

Student Planners:
A planner will be an invaluable tool for time-management, organization and assignment reminder.  Many students will be using a planner already.  We cannot emphasize enough how critical this is as a life-long skill.  All gr. 7 & 8 students will recieve a planner in September at a cost of  $5.00.

Student Coucil:
Every classroom will choose 2 student coucil reps.  Please consider running for one of these positions. We strongly encourage student "voice" in this school. The student coucil is responsible for Spirit Days, polling students to get opinions and raising funds for various charities.  This year they distributed candy-grams for Valentine's Week.

Report Cards:
Teachers communicate with the students parents by phone, through their planner, notes, newsletters, etc.  We will be sending home 3 report cards next year as per ministry requirements.  Students are always urged to take part in report interviews.

YOU ARE PART OF THE PUZZLE!
To Hillcrest Students:
You are a future part of Hillcrest P.S.  Your contribution will make a big difference in the overall picture of our school.  Your attitude, involvement and commitment will be the main determining factor in how much you get out of being here.  Highschool is just around the corner.
Accept the challenge and get ready to make a difference at Hillcrest!!!
