Loppon Tsering Samdup was born in India in 1970. He did his primary schooling at a Tibetan day school at Kollegal in south India. At the age of 13 he joined a Tibetan Buddhist monastery at Bir. He studied reading, writing and some monastic discipline in the monastery for approximately three years. Then he joined Sakya College, one of the higher Buddhist institutes in Northern India. There he studied Buddhist philosophy for nine years and finished his Kachopa and Loppon degrees, which are equivalent to a Bachelor of Art and Master of Art respectively.

After he finished his studies in the College, he taught monks in the Sakya monastery at Bir for a year or so. He also did several retreats at the monastery. Then he was offered a seat for a translation course at Dharamsala by the principal of Sakya College and he undertook it successfully. After finishing the course, he joined some senior Lamas as an interpreter in Singapore and Malaysia on a couple of occasions.

Not long after at the request of the local Buddhist group of Whyalla, (Sakya Yigah Choeling) he was appointed as Resident Teacher. He arrived in Whyalla in February 2000. Since then he has been actively involved in supporting the local Buddhist community, not only in Whyalla but also Adelaide, Port Lincoln and Sydney. His activities have included giving teachings, running meditation classes, public talks, counseling, interviews, prayers, presiding over ceremonies, language classes, supervising retreats etc.
