Career:
Journalism -I am a writer and editor at Discover Magazine. I also
occasionally write freelance.
Mental healthcare - I worked for several years as a counselor
with many roles in mostly residential environments. This was
in-the-trenches work helping clients to acquire life skills,
rehabilitate, and handle symptoms. I worked with teenagers who had
committed sexual offenses, with adults with diagnoses from
personality disorders to schizophrenia, and with kids who had
Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit disorder.
Arts administration - My early career was in non-profit arts
administration, working as program coordinator at the multi-media
arts organization Harvestworks in Soho, managing director at
experimental music organization Roulette in Tribeca, and varying
roles at public radio station WFMU-FM and at historic jazz and blues
label Delmark in Chicago.
