A.K. Antony is taking over the reins of Kerala State for the third
time[2001].
First enthroned to the Chief Ministership on 27 April 1977.
Second term was in 1995. This is for the fifth time has been elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Held the portfolio for Food and Civil Supplies for a short period in the Union Cabinet during the regime of Shri. P.V. Narasimha
Rao.
Born
as the son of Arackaparambil Kurian Pillai and Aleyamma at Cherthala
in Alappuzha he came to the public platform leading the student's
movements in his school days.
Antony
is one among the rarest leaders who is recognised and respected by
all political parties and the people in all walks of life.
Antony
is the epitome of unpolluted politics. He has no fascination for
titles, no haughtiness of power. He proved himself that he as no
attraction towards the chair of power.
Antony
ignores the disapproval of his colleagues to cooperate with anyone
who agrees with his principles and policies even if they belong to
another party or group. He was sworn is as 18th Chief Minister of
Kerala on 17, May, 2001
Education
Antony did his primary education in
Government High school, Cherthala. He took his degree in BA from
Maharajas College and BL from Law College, Eranakulam
POLITICAL
ACTIVITIES
School Level and College Level
Antony
came into the limelight of politics in his school days. His
organisational qualities helped him to become the Union Secretary of
Maharajas College which helped him to become a noteworthy student
leader at the state level.
Antony
emerged successful to form a strong array of youth movements against
the E.M.S. ministry of 1957. He was the anchor person behind the
students' strike demanding the state government to reduce the boat
charge of the students of Kuttanadu. It spread like wild fire all
over the state. He led several successful struggles against the
authority. The 'pattini jatha' and 'veluthullikayal prakshobhanam',
he led from Kasargod to Trivandrum gained public interest. The
reason for the latter struggle was an eviction by the church
authorities. Antony exhibited his bravery to question the church
authorities. The movement attained its goal finally which became a
milestone in Antony's political growth.
State
level
Antony became Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee Secretary
and laision committee member of UDF in 1970. He was first elected to
the assembly in 1970 from Cherthala. He became the Chief minister of
Kerala in 1977-78 and 1995-96 periods. He was elected from
Kazhakoottam and Tirurangadi respectively during these periods. He
adorned the chair of KPCC Vice President for a long period. Antony
the chief minster of kerala got elected from cherthala in 2001
polls.
National level
Antony
was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1985 to 91 and 1991 to 96. He was
the minister for Civil Supplies in Narasimha Rao ministry in the
latter period. He is one of the top most and responsible Congress
leaders of the country. He was elected several times to the Congress
Working Committee, the superior strata of Congress party, he was
once again nominated to AICC in 1997. Now also he is working as a
working committee member
Achievements
1.
Marked the end of the misery of slum dwellers of Chenkalchoola in .
Trivandrum providing them apartments thus improving their living
qualities.
2. Gave sanctions to establish Kannur University.
3. Sanctioned money to commence the work of the new assembly
complex. It was his government which gave land to establish A.K.G.
Research Centre.

Antony government was the first to sanction festival allowance to
employees.
5.
The authority of recruiting to cooperative institutions was given to
PSC by his government.
6. He
formulated an action plan to entrust authorities for the development
in coastal and hilly areas.

Antony, a true Gandhian, took a brave and bold step to prohibit
alcohol to help to improve the living conditions of the families of
the drunkards and improve the moral status of the state
