Writing
There are 3 kinds of japanese writing:

Hiragana: A phonetic syllabary.

Katakana: A second phonetic syllabary used for foreign words brought into Japan, onomatopoeias, and other instances when written emphasis is desired.

Kanji: Chinese characters, each one expressing a meaning.
