Perth Glory Information
This is not your conventional information page. It is more for those sad buggers who support their club from back home in wherever it is that they came from, who refuse to support the Glory for what ever reason. Oh and on the whole, it is indirectly marketing and promoting the club, something which the local telly stations pathetically and needlessly refuse to do.
Perth Glory have been offering football of the real / round balled variety to the people of Perth since 1996-7, and from day one we have set the benchmark for the National Soccer League. We are yet to win the comp's title (which is an AFL / NRL playoff / finals system thing.) but we have topped the league once - the "Minor" Premiership. Unfortunately, you cannot please 100% of the people 100% of the time, thus the Finals system is employed to entise those who normally support AFL or NRL. I am one who oddly enough favours the finals system simply because there is no relegation system. I have my ideas on how the league at present should be formatted, but the formatting of this page doesn't allow enough room! :)
If you are yet to experience a Glory match (and you live in Perth) - for whatever reason - and you love your footy in a big way, then you don't know what you are missing! Sure, the quality of the play may not be of EPL or Serie A standard... so effin' what? Get behind the team anyway, sink a few beers and join in the fun and singing in the Shed! ("The Shed" is a covered area of terracing on the North stand where all the singing is done.) Of course if you don't want to jolt yer head around every five seconds trying to get a view in cos the person in front of you is 7"11 -, you don't have to. The Southern Stand, for example, is my second choice other than the Shed.
Sadly, we do not have a LOCAL rival... yet.... So we make our own! There is a "friendly" rivalry between the "Left" and "Right" sides of the Shed. I am proudly of the latter.
So what if the beer at the ground isn't the best? (Far from it.) Most people use it as a means of celebrating a goal than getting merry!
It is much better to sink your grog at one of a few good pubs nearby the ground. The favourite is the Brisbane Hotel (a.k.a. the Brizzy) simply because it has a fairly large beer garden. The selection of beers could be better, but what the hey! Come on down and enjoy a laugh, a pint and a fantastic atmosphere before and after the game. Other good pubs are the Queens (viewed by some as a pre-pre-match pub - no type-o!) which is very close to the Brizzy, the Northbridge Hotel and the Inglewood Hotel. The latter two I am yet to visit but the Queens is great as they have much better beers. Why have a boring can of lager when you could be drinking some of the UK and Ireland's best and finest beers?
Our real rivals are the Melbourne Knights. Their approach to football and certain past incedents have made them the team us Glory lads love to hate. We don't like red and white! Oh and the Wollongong Wolves - after the Grand Final loss in 1999-2000 are our rivals on the playing field.
To conclude, I can only do so much to convince those stay-away people to come and have some fun. Our TV stations who decide for some reason that the Glory isn't worth covering really need to chin up and promote Perth's second most popular sport. It's their loss just as much as it is ours. The club too, needs to advertise. Advertising SELLS! Oz's (true) favourite beer isn't all that good and it sells like hotcakes. Likewise for our favourite fast food chains. If the club shoves Glory Glory Glory at the people of Perth, then the only result is a bigger crowd! In any case, get off yer lorrels and come and sing your hearts out for the lads! You won't regret it!
