Lesson Plan I
Communication Arts 1
Periods 6 and 7
Aim:
How do we improve our reading and comprehension skills through author study
(GARY SOTO)?
Materials:
books from the classroom library, individual copies of “Taking Sides” by Gary Soto,
regular notebooks, pens.
STANDARDS:
Reading
(E1), Speaking (E3), Listening (E3), Conventional Grammar and Usage of
Literature (E4)
Students
will enter classroom and proceed to their workstations. Students will then go
to the classroom library to choose books for independent reading. They will
continue reading books or choose new ones.
Independent
silent reading will take place. This should last no more than 20 minutes. While
reading, students will add to their word bank and note any examples of sensory
description.
Some
Students will do their annotated bibliography during this period. The
facilitator will rotate and assist with the annotated bibliographies (spelling,
grammar, etc.)
After
Independent Reading and vocabulary review, Book Talk will take place – as per
mini lesson already done. At least three students will be selected (or will
volunteer) to do book talk. Questions and answers by the rest of the class will
follow each book talk. This should last at least 10 – 15 minutes.
Students
will give report on their initial research findings. They will then finalize their
topics and questions will be answered.
This
should last 5 – 7 minutes.
Assigned
workstations will then distribute journals and individual text by Gary Soto.
READ
ALOUD will then take place. While the teacher is doing the read aloud, students
will follow in their text. Text to self will be observed as necessary. Students
are encouraged to ask questions as necessary.
