Aim: HOW DO WE PROPERLY USE INFORMATIONAL MATERIAL TO PROPERLY DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING ABOUT A SUBJECT?

SUBJECT: OUR NEIGHORBOOD – NEW YORK, NEW YORK (another view)

DOCUMENT – Excerpt from “Having our say – the Delany sisters’ first 100 years. By Sarah Delany and Elizabeth Delany (with Amy Hearth)

This lesson is to be used in conjunction with and to complement other such lessons on this and other related subjects.

STANDARDS ADRESSED: Reading (E1), Writing (E2), Conventional Usage of English Grammar (E4), Public Documents (E)

Chapter 15 of the narrative tells of the trip to NYC, in 1915

Elicit from students the state of NY and of the world in 1915 – based on prior knowledge and any educative guesses. (Transportation, housing, schools etc.)

Teacher will read the narrative to the students while they follow their own document. Provisions will be made to answer question and to elaborate while reading.

Students will be asked to – explain the second paragraph in their own words. (A clear understanding of a paragraph will be introduced and/or enforced)

Third paragraph mentions the bridges and roadways. Students will be asked to list as many bridges in NYC as possible. (This could be seen as an extension to the “Categorizing Items” lesson)

Why do you think there are so many bridges in NYC (critical thinking)?

Why was it hard for people to find housing in New York then?

Why so many “colored folk” were making their way to New York?

Write an opening paragraph to this passage.

Write a closing paragraph to this passage.

TEACHER WILL CONSTANTLY MONITOR STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE AND CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING AS THE LESSON PROGRESSES.
