On Sunday, the Saints pulled out a 6-5 win in their first game of the season against the Becker Bandits in Lakewood League action at Schneider Field. The Saints pounded out 13 hits in the game, three by Charlie Carr (3-for-5, double, run, RBI) and two each by Luke Schumer (2-for-4, 2 runs), Steve Newman (2-for-4, run), and Keith Plekkenpol (2-for-4, RBI). Jason Wald finished with a double and two RBIs on the day as well. The Saints used four pitchers in the game, with Jason Ellingson picking up the win and Plekkenpol notching his first save.
The Saints got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when Schumer led off with a single, advanced to second on Wald's sacrifice bunt, and scored on a single by Carr. Becker took the lead in the top of the sixth with three runs of their own, but the Saints stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good. Dan Scholand led off with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. Schumer then walked, stole second, and both he and Scholand scored on Wald's double to left. A Bandit error off Carr's bat moved Wald to third, Carr then stole second, and another error off Newman's bat allowed Wald to score and Carr to move up to third. With Newman running and two outs, Plekkenpol singled to score Carr and after the ball was mishandled, Newman also came in to score and give the Saints a 6-3 lead. Becker came back with two more runs in the top of the eighth to pull within 6-5, but Plekkenpol came on with runners on second and third with no outs to retire the next three batters and get out of the scoring threat. A perfect ninth inning gave him his first save of the year and secured the Saints' first win.
