The Word

In these ancient pages
Of timeless scriptures
And infinite wisdom,
If thou canst find but one word,
Let that word be "love."

And of these mystic parables
Of divine origin
And careful record,
If thou shold hear but one thing,
Let thy ears hear compassion.

And of the chaptered passages
Of righteous laws
And moral lecture,
If one thing be remmbered,
Let thyself think on mercy.

And of these numbered verses,
Of which are many
And varried in lesson,
If any verse be highly cherished
Let that verse speak love.
