Scene 8

Lights up on the cafe, Tom and Gabe are sitting at a table talking over drinks.

Gabe: So what happened after that?

Tom: Well were both hungry.  She offered to make some kind of Indian dish, so I had to think quick.  We ordered out chinese, and we just talked the rest of the night.

Gabe: And that's it?  Nothing else happened?

Tom: No, Gabe, nothing else happened.

Gabe: Tom, she spent the night...

Tom: So?  I wasn't about to make her go to some hotel.  I have a guest room so I might as well use it, I told her she could stay at my place as long as she needs to.

Gabe: Right, and you dont't have any ulterior motives in that, huh?

Tom: Of course I don't.  I have a girlfriend, and she'll be here in a few minutes so that we can work on our relationship and try and put things back in order.

Gabe: Really?  You're gonna live happily ever after with Judith, huh?  Well that sounds perfect.  I mean, that's what I'd do, let the most beautiful girl in the world live in my house and dream about me while I spent my time pursuing a dead relationship.  Yeah, good plan.

Tom: Its not a dead relationship, I just don't give up on people like that.

Gabe: All I'm saying is that Christine loves you, and you know she does, but here you are going after Judith, and whatever she's after its not your love, and that's the truth, whether you see it or not.  Christine has never betrayed you, and you know what you can expect from her.  You stay with Judith and you'll always be wondering, suspicious.  You'll never be abel to trust her the way you can trust Christine.  I swear, if I only I were so blessed as to have a decision as easy as this one, I'd do anything to be in your shoes.  If you don't see how obvious the answer is, well...its the worst mistake you'll ever make.

Tom: You make it sound so simple...

Gabe: Because it is.  You love her, you know it.

Tom: And how can you be so sure about that?

Gabe: Because I'm Gabriel, its what I do.  Well here comes Judith, I can't be here.  I hope you do what you ought to.

Gabe exits just as Judith arrives and takes her seat with Tom.

Judith: Hey.

Tom:  Hey, want a drink or something?

Judith: No, no I'm alright.  Are we alright?

Tom: I don't know Judith, I suppose that would be up to you.  How's Silverman?

Judith: I wouldn't know, and that's the truth.  I broke it off with him, told I wouldn't be seeing him again, at all.  I just want to make it up to you, let me try?

Tom: How can I trust you anymore?  Silverman is one of my peers, I see him alot.  You've injured my pride, my reputation will suffer, people will talk.  You think I can just forget all this and look the other way?

Judith: I know, you have no reason to believe me, but give me a chance, that's all, one chance and I'll make it up to you.  That's cliche and sounds unconvincing, I know, but it's all I can say.  I'm sorry.

Tom: Alright, apology accepted.  Hungry yet?

Judith: A little, but what I'd rather do is go back to your place...

Tom: Oh, actually, I have a guest, so it'd have to be your place, and even so I don't want to leave her alone too long.

Judith: You mean Christine?

Tom: Yeah, the gilr you met last night, remember?

Judith: Yeah, I know.  You told me all about her before.  Why is she still there?

Tom: Because I'm letting her live there until she finds her own place.

Judith: You mean she spent the night??

Tom: Yes...in the guest room.  What's the problem?

Judith: Your ex-girlfriend living with you, that's the problem.

Tom: Hey, she's my best friend, and like I said its only until she finds her own place, so chill.

Judith: Oh sure.  And I'm sure she's trying real hard, like she's in a real hurry to get out of having a free room with you.

Tom: What are you saying?

Judith: She's not going to move, she's going to stay there adn work on you, try and take you from me!

Tom: Oh god...She isn't like that, and I'll thank you not to question my good friends or my judgement.

Judith: I saw the way she looked at you...

Tom: Enough!  I am not the one here who needs tpo be defending my decisions, remember?  Do you really want to start our second chance off like this?

Judith: No, sorry.

Tom: Alright then.  Look, why don't you come by for dinner tonight?  It will give the two of you a chance to know each other better, and put your fears to rest.  Gabe will be there too.  It'll be fun, ok?

Judith: Alright.  Anything to spend more time with you.

Tom: Thank you.

They kiss.
